New Delhi, Apr 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid a heartfelt tribute to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar on his birth anniversary, recalling his unwavering commitment to national interest and his contribution to social harmony and nation-building.

Taking to his X handle, PM Modi wrote, "Humble tribute to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar ji on his birth anniversary. He always kept national interest paramount in his politics. His efforts for social harmony and nation-building will always be remembered."

Along with his tribute, the Prime Minister shared two pictures of the late leader, reminiscing his significant impact on the country’s political landscape.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended his tributes to Chandrashekhar, describing him as a strong voice for the oppressed and deprived. The CM wrote on his X handle in Hindi, "A humble tribute to the strong voice of the oppressed and deprived, popular politician and nationalist thinker, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar ji, on his birth anniversary! His commitment towards nation-building, social justice, and public welfare is a guiding light for all of us."

Born on July 1, 1927, in Ibrahimpatti, Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, Chandrashekhar was drawn to politics during his student days and emerged as a firebrand leader with a revolutionary zeal. He began his parliamentary journey in 1962 when he was elected as a member of the Parliament from Uttar Pradesh on a PSP ticket, a position he held for most of his life, with a brief hiatus from 1984 to 1989.

Chandrashekhar joined the Indian National Congress in 1964 but parted ways with the party during the 1975 Emergency. He was imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and later documented his experiences in the 'Jail Diary.' His political career was marked by his advocacy for social justice and the upliftment of the poor.

In 1983, as the President of the Janata Party, Chandrashekhar undertook a padayatra from Kanyakumari to Rajghat, New Delhi, to highlight the issues of social justice and equality. His tenure as the Prime Minister began on November 10, 1990, with support from multiple political parties, including Congress, after the resignation of Vishwanath Pratap Singh. However, his government collapsed in 1991 when Congress withdrew support.

Chandrashekhar passed away on July 8, 2007, at the age of 80. His legacy continues to inspire political leaders, and his commitment to the nation and its welfare remains etched in the annals of India's history.
