Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 24: The Infant Jesus Shrine at Bikarnakatte joined millions across the globe in mourning the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. The Shrine, a beacon of devotion in the region, dedicated the day to offer special prayers and Holy Masses for the repose of the soul of the beloved pontiff.

As the faithful gathered for the regular Thursday Novena, all nine Masses scheduled for the day were offered for the eternal rest of Pope Francis. A special commemorative Eucharistic celebration was held at 10:30 a.m., presided over by Rev. Fr Deep Fernandes, OCD, Delegate Provincial to the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS). The congregation came together in deep prayer, seeking comfort and strength, and thanking God for the life and papacy of Pope Francis.

Following the Mass, Fr Stifan Perera, director of the Shrine, delivered a heartfelt obituary in remembrance of the Holy Father. Fr Stifan reflected on the profound spiritual legacy and pastoral simplicity that defined Pope Francis’ tenure. He recalled the Pope’s keen interest in India and his vision for the universal Church. Fr Stifan mentioned how Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended invitations to Pope Francis to visit India both in 2021 and again in 2024, gestures that underscored the importance of the Pope’s global presence.

Fr Stifan also noted that Pope Francis had appointed Oswald Cardinal Gracias, then Archbishop of Bombay, to the Council of Cardinals - an unprecedented move recognizing the Indian Church’s growing role in the universal Church. The Council, instituted by the Pope himself, was a select group entrusted with advising him on Church governance. Moreover, Fr Stifan highlighted that Pope Francis canonized six Blesseds from India, further celebrating the nation's vibrant contribution to the Church’s mission.

A floral tribute was solemnly offered before the portrait of Pope Francis by Rev. Fr Melvin D’Cunha, the Superior of the Monastery, Rev. Fr Deep Fernandes, and representatives of the faithful, symbolizing the collective grief and reverence of the community.

In the evening, devotees assembled at the Shrine’s entrance for a special candlelight rosary. Holding lighted candles and united in silent prayer, they implored the Lord for Pope Francis’ eternal rest and peace. The sight of flickering flames against the twilight sky bore testimony to the Pope’s enduring light in the hearts of the faithful.

Pope Francis’ body lies in state at the Vatican, where thousands continue to pay their final respects. His funeral is scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. IST, marking the end of an era and the farewell to a shepherd who led with compassion, humility, and courage.
