New Delhi, May 17: The Union Jal Shakti Ministry has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will remain suspended until Islamabad permanently ends its support for cross-border terrorism.
The ministry’s firm stance was conveyed to Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan in its monthly report, amid renewed appeals from Pakistan urging India to reconsider the suspension of the 1960 treaty, which governs water sharing and supports millions of lives in both countries.

Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Jal Shakti Ministry, said in her report on Tuesday that the government took the decision to place the treaty in “abeyance” following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, allegedly sponsored from across the border.
“The key water-sharing treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism,” she stated.
The move marks a significant escalation in India’s diplomatic posture and highlights growing frustration over continued terror activities emanating from Pakistan. The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, has survived multiple India-Pakistan conflicts, but its future now appears uncertain amid rising tensions.
