London, Jun 5: England's promising wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, fresh off a stellar ODI performance, is setting his sights on the high-voltage Test series against India starting June 20 at Headingley. The 24-year-old, who made headlines with a blistering 64 off 28 balls in the final ODI against West Indies, is bracing himself for the ultimate red-ball challenge — facing Jasprit Bumrah.
In a candid and humorous tone, Smith remarked, “Hopefully, down at No. 7, I can watch other lads go and face him first,” drawing laughter while acknowledging the reputation of India’s pace spearhead.
Smith, who is yet to face Bumrah in any format, admitted the challenge is real but believes that closely observing his teammates handle the Indian ace could give him crucial insights. With England’s bold ‘Bazball’ approach expected to continue, Smith’s attacking style may prove to be a valuable addition in the middle order.
Reflecting on England’s 3-0 sweep against West Indies, Smith said his maiden ODI half-century has added to his confidence ahead of the India series. “It’s definitely great practice for the India series. It feels like we’re almost there,” he shared, indicating the team’s growing readiness.
Since his Test debut last summer replacing Jonny Bairstow, Smith has steadily impressed the selectors. His recent form and ability to adapt to various roles position him as a strong contender in England’s Test setup.
Not part of England's T20 squad, Smith now gets a short breather before diving into red-ball preparations. “I feel good. Hopefully, the next 10 days or so can go well, prep-wise, and we can head into the India series quite fresh, which is amazing,” he added.
As the countdown to the much-awaited five-match Test series begins, Jamie Smith’s mix of humour, hunger, and composure adds a refreshing spark to England’s camp — especially as they prepare to counter the lethal pace of Jasprit Bumrah and India’s fiery bowling lineup.
