Nagpur, Jul 11: A remark by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has sparked a flutter in political circles after he appeared to suggest that leaders should step aside upon reaching the age of 75. The statement, made during the launch of a biography titled Moropant Pingale: The Architect of Hindu Resurgence in Nagpur, has led to intense speculation as both Bhagwat and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are slated to turn 75 this September.
Narrating an anecdote from an RSS meeting in Vrindavan, Bhagwat recalled a moment when the late Moropant Pingale, upon being felicitated on his 75th birthday, remarked that the gesture signified a respectful nudge to step aside. Quoting Pingale, Bhagwat said, “You gave me a shawl at 75, but I know what that means. When someone is felicitated at 75, it means: now your time is up, now step aside and let us do the work.” He also said that though the moment was filled with respect, Pingale ensured he did not get attached to the honour, choosing instead to pave the way for others.

The remarks have quickly drawn attention, especially given the BJP’s past precedent of retiring leaders after they crossed the age of 75. Leaders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were moved to the Margdarshak Mandal in 2014, after Narendra Modi took over as Prime Minister. However, the BJP has dismissed any connection between Bhagwat’s comments and the current leadership, stating that the anecdote was historical in nature and should not be linked to any individual.
Despite the clarification, Bhagwat’s words have ignited discussions within both political and Sangh circles, with many wondering if a generational shift may be on the cards within the saffron fold. While there has been no official indication of any such development, the timing of the statement and its delivery have added fuel to ongoing speculation.
