New Delhi, Jul 11: Mild tremors were felt in Delhi and surrounding areas on Friday evening after an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck Jhajjar in Haryana, marking the second such quake in the region within 48 hours.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 7:49 pm at a depth of 10 km. Tremors were also reported from nearby districts, including Rohtak and Bahadurgarh, triggering alarm among residents.
Just a day earlier, a stronger 4.4 magnitude quake had struck near the same area, causing widespread tremors across the Delhi-NCR region.
Delhi falls under Seismic Zone IV, which is categorized as a high-risk seismic zone. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority has warned that the region is susceptible to moderate to strong earthquakes, typically ranging from 5 to 6 magnitude, but even higher-intensity quakes have been recorded.
Experts say seismic activity in North India, including parts of Haryana and the Himalayan belt, is the result of ongoing tectonic stress caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. The accumulated stress eventually releases energy, resulting in earthquakes.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines in the event of aftershocks.
