Mumbai, Aug 11: As his latest production Dhadak 2 hits the big screens, filmmaker Karan Johar took a nostalgic detour on Monday to celebrate the 19th anniversary of his 2006 film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) — a film he still holds close to his heart.

Marking the occasion on Instagram, Johar shared a montage of behind-the-scenes photos and videos from the set of KANK, accompanied by a reflective caption.

“Some love stories transcend time and still hold all the power they once did. KANK for me will always be that,” Karan wrote.

“My third film in and I was moved again by the absolute honour of having such terrific people on set with me to make a story that was bold, brave and full of only heart.”

Released on August 11, 2006, KANK featured a star-studded ensemble including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, and Abhishek Bachchan. The film explored complex themes of love, loss, and extra-marital relationships, challenging the conventional family-oriented narratives Bollywood was known for at the time.

A Film Ahead of Its Time

Despite its high-profile cast and ambitious storytelling, KANK was met with mixed reviews and underperformed at the Indian box office. It sparked controversy for portraying infidelity — with critics warning it could “erode Indian values.”

However, in hindsight, the film has gained cult status for its honest, unflinching look at modern relationships. Especially in urban India, where conversations around love and marriage have evolved, the film’s narrative is now seen as progressive and emotionally resonant.

Music That Struck a Chord

While the film faced criticism, its soundtrack was a major hit, featuring iconic songs like Tumhi Dekho Na, Mitwa, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. The music remains one of the most enduring aspects of the film’s legacy.

For Karan Johar, KANK represents a turning point in his career — a shift toward more emotionally layered, adult themes. Even after nearly two decades, he continues to celebrate the film not just as a creative project, but as a personal journey.

“It was a story I believed in with all my heart,” he concluded in his post.

As Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna completes 19 years, its impact continues to linger — proving that some stories find their moment long after the credits roll.
