Toronto, Sep 2: Graham Greene, the acclaimed Canadian actor best known for his role in Dances with Wolves, passed away in Toronto on September 1 after a prolonged illness. He was 73.
Confirming the news, his agent Michael Greene described him as “a great man of morals, ethics, and character” who would be eternally missed. “You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven,” he said, referring to Greene’s longtime agent who passed away in 2013.
Life and Career
Born on June 22, 1952, in Ontario on the Six Nations Reserve, Greene paved the way for many Indigenous actors in the entertainment industry. He began his journey on stage in the 1970s before making his screen debut in the series The Great Detectives (1979). His first film appearance came with Running Brave in 1983.
Greene rose to international fame with Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves (1990), where he played the role of Kicking Bird. The film, which went on to win seven Academy Awards, earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He later appeared in a string of successful films including Maverick (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). His notable roles also included Thunderstorm (1992), Transamerica (2005), and Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River (2017). Sheridan continued to cast him in projects such as 1883 and Tulsa King.
Graham Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, and daughter, Lilly Lazare-Greene.
