Mumbai, Sept 11: Arteries play a crucial role in carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to every part of the body. When healthy, they remain flexible and elastic, allowing smooth circulation. However, deposits of cholesterol, fat, and calcium can gradually harden artery walls, a condition known as atherosclerosis, leading to coronary artery disease, stroke, or even sudden cardiac death.
Board-certified Interventional Cardiologist Dr Sanjay Bhojraj has stressed that protecting arteries is not about temporary solutions but about daily lifestyle choices. Drawing from his decades of medical experience, he highlighted four simple habits that significantly improve artery health without the need for medicines.
According to him, regular strength training helps regulate blood sugar, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and keeps arteries flexible. A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds reduces inflammation, lowers triglycerides, and promotes smoother blood flow. Proper sleep of seven to eight hours each night supports vascular repair, stabilizes blood pressure, and reduces stress hormones. Managing stress through relaxation practices helps lower heart strain and prevents arterial damage.
Dr Bhojraj underlined that these practices may appear simple, but when followed consistently, they act as a shield for the heart and improve overall longevity.
