Mumbai, Sep 23: Singer Kumar Sanu, known for his melodious hits, has long been in the public eye, but recent revelations from his former wife Rita Bhattacharya have cast a spotlight on his personal life. In a candid interview with Film Window, Rita opened up about the pain and hardships she endured during their marriage.

Rita claimed that she played a pivotal role in shaping Sanu’s career but was left “abandoned and humiliated” as his fame grew. “He is a great singer, but as a human being, it would be best to talk about him as less as possible. He was never ambitious. It was my dream to make him a singer, I pushed him. I helped Kumar Sanu become Kumar Sanu,” she said.

Recounting their early days in Mumbai, she described extreme struggles. “We didn’t have any money or transportation when we came to Mumbai. It was completely zero. He used to wear a lungi at that time. I used to push him out to go and struggle in Bombay. We used to sleep on the floor without a fan,” she added.

Rita alleged that after the massive success of Aashiqui, Sanu’s behavior changed, becoming “ill-mannered.” She said he distanced himself from family, even avoiding communication during their elder son Jiko’s wedding. “He likes when his life is publicly discussed, be it negatively or positively. He didn’t respond and blocked me and Jaan at that time. That was very insulting,” she said.

She also revealed severe mistreatment during her third pregnancy, alleging that she was not fed properly and was subjected to inhuman treatment. “Sanu took me to court on the basis of cruelty… He even had an affair during that time, that came out today,” Rita said. She added that she had to fend for herself and her children, including getting rice from the watchman and cooking her own meals while pregnant.

Kumar Sanu married Rita Bhattacharya in 1986, and the couple had three children—Jiko, Jassi, and Jaan. The marriage ended in 1994 after Sanu’s alleged affair with veteran actor Kunickaa Sadanand came to light, with Rita gaining custody of their children.

While Kumar Sanu continued to dominate the music industry with his hits, Rita’s revelations shed light on the personal struggles she endured behind the glamour, and she admitted that even after decades, she still seeks answers from her ex-husband about the end of their marriage.
