Fresh twist in Sunjay Kapur assets row: Karisma Kapoor’s kids allege misappropriation

New Delhi, Sep 26: The high-profile dispute over late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s assets took a dramatic turn on Friday, with Karisma Kapoor’s children alleging that their stepmother Priya Kapur “appropriated” property and wiped out bank accounts under a “bogus” will.

During a Delhi High Court hearing on Priya Kapur’s plea to submit Sunjay’s asset details in a sealed cover, Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Karisma’s children Samaira and Kiaan, objected to secrecy. “Confidentiality is a cloak under which you fritter away the assets. I need sunlight in this case because I have not been told about the assets,” he said.

Mr. Jethmalani further claimed that two bank accounts had been emptied and a 6% share in a company diverted to Priya Kapur. He argued there should be no media gag, pointing out that both sides had already discussed the matter publicly.

Priya Kapur’s counsel, Senior Advocate Rajiv Nayar, requested confidentiality, saying details revealed in court should not be made public. Justice Jyoti Singh directed that while parties should avoid speaking to the media, Priya Kapur may file the asset list in a sealed cover.

The judge also ordered that a copy of the will be provided to Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur, with an undertaking not to leak it, and that the original will remain in the custody of the Registrar General for secure handling.

The contentious case centres on Sunjay Kapur’s personal estate and is separate from the RK Trust, which sources close to Karisma Kapoor say her children cannot access despite claims of a Rs 1,900-crore stake.
