North Goa, Oct 4: High drama unfolded on the Mandovi river at Reis Magos on Thursday afternoon as locals confronted workers allegedly attempting to dredge the riverbed to pave the way for a floating casino.
Eyewitnesses said a barge carrying heavy machinery anchored along the Reis Magos side around 3 pm. Workers began marking sections of the river with floating red buoys and unloading equipment, sparking concern among residents. Nearly 70 villagers rushed to the spot, questioning the workers, who claimed they had official permission. Unconvinced, the locals demanded an immediate halt, prompting the workers to pack up and leave.

Villagers alleged the dredging was linked to plans for a five-storied offshore casino, which they said could devastate traditional fishing and shellfish collection in the area. North Goa District Congress president Virendra Shirodkar, who joined the protest, said, “The Mandovi is the lifeline for our fishing community. Hundreds of families will lose their livelihood if a casino anchors here. We will not allow this at any cost.”
Later, nearly 150 residents gathered at a Verem temple to discuss the incident. Local leaders, including Saligao MLA Kedar Naik and ZP member Sandeep Bandodkar, attended. Naik assured villagers, saying, “I stand with the people of Reis Magos. I will not allow any casino here.”
However, social worker Rajesh Dabholkar urged vigilance, warning, “We cannot blindly trust politicians. Villagers must stay alert and united to protect our way of life.” The meeting ended with a unanimous resolution to resist any attempts to set up a casino on the Reis Magos–Verem stretch.
Officials have yet to clarify whether the dredging attempt was authorised or linked to any casino project.
