Washington, Aug 7: Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has declared August 15 as 'India Day' in recognition of India's Independence Day and the contributions of the Indian-American community to the state's economy, culture and public life.

Healey signed the proclamation on August 1, marking August 15 as the anniversary of India's independence in 1947. The proclamation was also endorsed by Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Francis Galvin, who urged residents across the state to observe and celebrate India Day on August 15.

The proclamation acknowledged the global Indian diaspora, noting that more than 36 million people of Indian origin live outside India, including over five million in the United States.

It also recognised the significant contributions of the Indian-American community in Massachusetts across sectors such as entrepreneurship, healthcare, education, scientific research, technology, innovation and public service.

"The Indian American population in Massachusetts has made significant contributions in fields such as medicine, science, technology, education, business and public service, enriching the cultural and economic fabric of the Commonwealth," the proclamation stated.

The document further noted that Indian-Americans across Massachusetts celebrate India's Independence Day through events highlighting the country's rich cultural heritage, democratic values and commitment to peace and progress.

Meanwhile, Michelle Wu has also declared August 15 as 'India Day' in the city of Boston.

India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, commemorating its freedom from British rule in 1947. The day marks the country's emergence as an independent nation and its journey as the world's largest democracy.
