AR Rahman to enchant Varanasi with Ganga-side concert

Varanasi, Oct 10: Legendary musician AR Rahman is all set to mesmerize audiences on the ghats of the Ganga in Varanasi, marking his first-ever performance in the holy city, as part of NDTV Good Times’ new live concert and cultural experience platform.

Speaking to actor-musician Shruti Haasan on NDTV Good Times Soundscape, Rahman reflected on missed opportunities to visit Varanasi in the past. “I missed the chance many times — first around 1997, and then for Raanjhanaa. I also wanted to meet Ustad Bismillah Khan’s family, but couldn’t go. I think the opportunity has come now,” he said, noting that the city’s “energy and a million stories” will inspire him beyond the performance itself.

Rahman will perform with his raga-based ensemble, Jhaala, curated from 500 entries for the WAVES Summit 2025. “Jhaala stems from my intention to take Indian classical music global with a different outlook. The ensemble brings immersive energy to the audience, creating a unique musical vibe,” he shared.

The maestro will also present Sufi songs, celebrating the multicultural and spiritual essence of Varanasi, inspired by the late shehnai legend Ustad Bismillah Khan. Rahman hopes the performance will foster a sense of friendship and shared spirituality across religions. “Hopefully, this will be the peace concert that people want,” he said.

NDTV Good Times aims to transform live performances into immersive cultural experiences, showcasing iconic artistes like AR Rahman and creating memorable celebrations that highlight India’s rich artistic heritage.
