Udupi, Oct 14: Even as the massive socio-economic and educational survey by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes nears its deadline, Udupi taluk is struggling to keep up, with just 74.36% of households covered—the lowest in the district. In contrast, the district as a whole has achieved 87.93% survey completion, closely trailing the state average of 90.23%.
The comprehensive survey—aimed at collecting crucial data on the social, economic, and educational status of communities—is scheduled to conclude on October 18. In Udupi district, out of a total target of 3,62,093 households, enumeration has been completed in 2,54,463 households as of Monday evening. Surveyors covered 2,786 homes across all seven taluks on the day.

However, a significant 63,923 Unique Household IDs (UHIDs) have been closed—these refer to households where enumeration could not be carried out due to residents being absent or other factors.
While most taluks have crossed the 80% mark, Udupi taluk remains a cause for concern, both in terms of low coverage and high UHID closures. It accounts for 21,620 closed UHIDs, the highest in the district.
Meanwhile, some taluks have exceeded their targets, showcasing exceptional progress. Byndoor taluk has recorded a remarkable 108.53% completion rate, with 25,111 households surveyed against a target of 26,623. It also closed 3,084 UHIDs.
Hebri taluk has also surpassed expectations, completing 105.23% of its survey, covering 11,585 homes out of a target of 13,422, with 2,539 UHIDs closed.
The UHID (Unique Household ID) system is used to track and verify survey data. When a household is found locked or inaccessible after repeated attempts, its UHID is marked as closed.
Officials have urged residents to cooperate in the final stretch of the survey to ensure accurate data collection, which will be crucial for future policy decisions related to reservations, education, employment, and social welfare schemes.
With less than a week to go, district administrators are expected to intensify efforts, particularly in Udupi taluk, to meet the October 18 deadline.
