Panaji, Oct 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked Diwali this year aboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, where he celebrated the festival with Indian Navy personnel and praised the growing strength of India's self-reliant defence sector.
Speaking to the officers and sailors on board, PM Modi called INS Vikrant a powerful symbol of India's "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative. “This indigenous warship slicing through the seas reflects India's rising military prowess,” he said, adding, “Just a few months ago, the very name 'Vikrant' was enough to unsettle Pakistan.”
The Prime Minister commended the armed forces for their unified and decisive role in Operation Sindoor, highlighting the coordination between the Navy, Army, and Air Force. “The Indian Navy's presence, the Air Force’s precision, and the Army’s courage forced a swift surrender by Pakistan,” he stated.

He underscored the critical need for self-reliance in the defence sector, especially during times of conflict. “The nation that can defend itself without depending on others has a clear advantage in war. Strength comes from within, and the more we indigenise, the more powerful we become.”
PM Modi noted that India’s defence manufacturing sector has expanded significantly in the past decade. “Since 2014, the Navy has received more than 40 indigenously built warships and submarines. Today, we are adding a new warship or submarine to the fleet approximately every 40 days,” he said. He also highlighted that defence production had crossed Rs 1.5 lac crore last year—more than triple what it was 11 years ago.
Praising India's missile capabilities, the Prime Minister referenced the performance of missiles like BrahMos and Akash during Operation Sindoor. “The name ‘BrahMos’ itself makes enemies anxious. Many countries are now seeking to purchase Indian-made missiles. Our goal is to rank among the top global defence exporters,” he said.
Reflecting on his Diwali celebration with the Navy, PM Modi said, “People prefer to celebrate Diwali with their families. Today, I am with my family – all of you. That makes this Diwali even more special.”
He also recalled the commissioning of INS Vikrant, describing it as a landmark moment for India’s naval history. “Vikrant is not just a warship—it is a floating example of India’s innovation and determination,” he said. He also noted the Navy's recent adoption of a new ensign inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, marking a move away from colonial-era symbols.
In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the men and women of the Navy. “These grand vessels and powerful weapons are vital, but it's your spirit and courage that give them life. From the deck of INS Vikrant, I extend heartfelt Diwali wishes to every Indian.”
