India crush Chile 7–0 in Junior World Cup opener

Chennai, Nov 29: India got off to a roaring start in the Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup 2025, defeating Chile with a dominant 7-0 performance in their opening Pool B match at Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium, Chennai. The hosts joined defending champions Germany, along with Argentina and Belgium, in registering comfortable victories on the opening day. The Under-21 tournament is being held across Chennai and Madurai.

India has announced an 18-member squad for the tournament, led by captain Rohit in defence. Two-time Olympic bronze medallist PR Sreejesh is guiding the young side as the chief coach. India, placed in Pool B with Chile, Oman and Switzerland, is aiming for a third Junior World Cup title after previous wins in earlier editions.

In Group A, Germany showcased their supremacy once again with a solid 4-0 win over South Africa in Madurai. With seven titles, Germany remain the most successful team in the tournament’s history and currently top their group with three points. Ireland edged out Canada 4-3 in the other Group A match, climbing to second place on goal difference, while Canada and South Africa remain without points.

In Pool B’s second match, Switzerland defeated Oman 4-0. Group C also witnessed strong performances, with two-time champions Argentina beating Japan 4-1, while New Zealand overpowered China 5-3. In Group D, Belgium demolished debutants Namibia 12-1, and Spain registered an 8-0 win over Egypt in Madurai.

The 2025 edition is the biggest Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup ever, featuring 24 teams divided into six groups of four. The group winners will advance directly to the quarterfinals. This marks the 14th edition of the prestigious global tournament.
