Miami, Dec 7: Lionel Messi described it as a “beautiful, emotional moment” after guiding Inter Miami to their maiden MLS Cup title with a 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. Messi provided two assists, securing his 44th senior career title and third with Miami.
The victory marks the club’s biggest achievement since its launch in 2020 with backing from David Beckham. Messi, named MLS Cup MVP, said winning the league had been the team’s primary goal. “It’s a very new club. This was the real objective—to win MLS and be at the top of the American league,” he told ESPN.

Inter Miami took an early lead through an eighth-minute own goal by Vancouver defender Édier Ocampo. The visitors, led by captain Thomas Müller, fought back strongly and equalised in the 60th minute through Ali Ahmed.
Miami regained control when Messi intercepted possession in the 71st minute and set up fellow Argentine Rodrigo De Paul, who restored the lead. Deep into stoppage time, Messi assisted Tadeo Allende in the 96th minute to seal the victory.
The match also marked the final professional appearance of Sergio Busquets, who retired alongside Jordi Alba after the game. First-year coach Javier Mascherano praised Messi’s impact, calling the triumph “very special.”
For Beckham, the win capped a 12-year journey since he first secured rights to start an MLS franchise. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he said, noting that Messi’s competitive spirit continues to define the club.
With a new stadium set to open next season, Inter Miami will enter 2026 as strong contenders aiming for back-to-back titles under their iconic leader.
