UNDP report highlights digital platforms boosting India’s immunisation and social systems

New Delhi, Feb 4: Government-backed digital platforms developed with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), including U-WIN and the Electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (eVIN), have significantly strengthened India’s immunisation ecosystem, according to a UNDP report released on Wednesday.

The findings were outlined in UNDP’s Annual Report 2025, which was launched at the UN House during the Country Programme Management Board meeting. The report noted that the U-WIN platform played a key role in tracking immunisation services for nearly 32 million pregnant women and around 97 million children across the country.

Meanwhile, eVIN helped authorities monitor vaccine stocks and cold-chain temperatures at about 30,000 cold-chain points nationwide, ensuring the safety and management of over 650 million vaccine doses.

Beyond immunisation, the report said these digital and governance platforms also contributed to broader development outcomes. Insurance coverage was extended to 42 million farmers, while more than 63,000 people were supported through climate-resilient livelihood initiatives.

The report highlighted UNDP’s role in advancing progress across several priority areas, including localisation and acceleration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), digital health solutions, childcare support systems, crop insurance, and climate action.

“India’s development progress in 2025 reflects strong government leadership in delivering at scale through public systems,” said Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative of UNDP India. “These systems span health, insurance, care, and climate action, reaching women, children, farmers, waste workers, and low-income households.”

She added that UNDP was proud to support these initiatives by strengthening technical capacity and helping public programmes function more efficiently and respond swiftly when required.

The report further noted that UNDP has been working closely with national and state governments to ensure that SDGs move effectively from policy frameworks to on-ground implementation. The SDG Coordination and Acceleration approach has now been institutionalised across key ministries, leading to more aligned and coherent delivery.

At the state and Union Territory level, SDG monitoring frameworks are operational in 33 out of 36 regions, improving the use of data in planning, budgeting, and decision-making.

Economic security also received a boost through stronger social protection mechanisms and risk mitigation measures. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), crop insurance coverage expanded to 42 million farmers, helping agricultural households recover more quickly from climate-related and income shocks.

The report also underscored the impact of community-based childcare models, which enabled women in low-income urban areas to take up paid employment while simultaneously generating jobs in the care economy.

In 2025, UNDP supported India in developing its National Adaptation Plan and a gender-responsive Biodiversity Finance Plan. In addition, community-led restoration programmes helped over 63,000 people build climate-resilient livelihoods, reducing vulnerability to environmental shocks while sustaining incomes, the report said.
