It is unbelievable that 4000 storage boxes were destroyed in a fire. It is a huge loss for the owners of the plastic boxes. I feel something is fishy about this incident and police should probe and get hold of the persons who did this. The pictures clicked by Ramesh Pandith of Daijiworld shows a sorry sight. Luckily no houses nearby was destroyed and also no body was injured.

Fishing industry of Mangalore obviously brings hundreds of crores of revenue plus creates thousands of jobs from the fishermen to the auctioneers, sellers and distributors. From the mere outlook at Bunder although the industry portrays a primitive nature of business with lack of hygiene and lack of organization, yet the industry provides fish for a vast population throughout the region.

The series of fire incidents must be taken into serious consideration by the Government officials because the fishing industry must be creating a large chunk of tax revenues for the government. Safety, security, surveilance as well as health and hygeine are all part and portion of the Government responsibility because the consistency and stability of fishing industry helps tens of thousands of people in the region in their daily diet.

Witnessing dozens of fishing boats bringing tons of fresh fish every day alongside the Bunder harbour is not only a fascinating scene but also a success story that is worth nerrating.

It is our sincere hope therefore that the Government will review all the safety standards in and around Bunbder so that the fishermen will not only earn their daily livelihood but also help the local industry and the local population in the daily fish needs. If we from a distance share our concern over the fire hazards we can imagine how the local population in Mangalooru feels about the sad incidence of the fire hazard. Thank you.
