New Delhi, Apr 8: To enhance passenger comfort and curb the growing nuisance of noise in coaches, the Indian Railway Board has intensified its campaign for onboard etiquette, issuing a direct appeal to commuters to "Please use headphones."
The directive comes in response to a surge in complaints regarding "acoustic tension" caused by passengers speaking loudly on mobile phones or streaming media without earphones. With high-speed data becoming more accessible, the tendency for travelers to use speakerphones has become a primary source of conflict in reserved compartments.

Strict enforcement of 'Quiet Hours'
In addition to the digital etiquette advisory, the Railways have reiterated the mandatory "Quiet Hours" observed from 10 pm to 6 am. During this window, strict regulations are in place to ensure a peaceful rest for all passengers:
-
Audio restrictions: Listening to music or watching videos on loud speakers is strictly prohibited; headphones are mandatory.
-
Lighting: All main cabin lights must be switched off, with only dim night lights remaining active.
-
Conversation: Loud talking and group discussions are not permitted.
-
Staff Conduct: These rules extend to railway staff, including TTEs and catering crews, who are instructed to perform their duties with minimal disruption.
The Railway Department has warned that passengers found repeatedly flouting these guidelines or causing a persistent nuisance will face firm action under the Railway Act. Onboard staff have been empowered to intervene and resolve disputes arising from noise violations immediately.
