Israel summons Spanish diplomat over Netanyahu effigy incident

Tel Aviv, Apr 12: Israel has reprimanded Spain’s top diplomat in Tel Aviv after an effigy of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was blown up during Easter celebrations in a Spanish town.

According to Israel’s foreign ministry, the incident took place in El Burgo, where the act was described as “incitement” allegedly linked to rhetoric by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The municipality, however, defended the event, noting that such effigy burnings are part of a long-standing local tradition during Easter festivities. In previous years, effigies of global leaders, including Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, have also been used in similar displays.

The annual event draws hundreds of spectators and is considered a symbolic cultural practice, though the latest incident has sparked diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
