Mumbai, May 2: Raja Shivaji, directed by and starring Riteish Deshmukh, registered a strong opening at the domestic box office, collecting around Rs 11.35 crore on its first day of release on Maharashtra Day.

According to trade estimates, the film earned Rs 8 crore nett from its Marathi version alone, marking one of the highest opening-day collections for a Marathi film. The Hindi version contributed Rs 3.35 crore, taking the total Day 1 collection to Rs 11.35 crore.

The historical action drama achieved the feat across 1,941 shows, recording an impressive average occupancy of 68 per cent. The strong opening follows an encouraging advance booking phase, which had already hinted at robust box office performance.

Ahead of release, the film recorded advance bookings worth Rs 5.14 crore gross, with the Marathi version contributing around Rs 4.25 crore gross (approximately Rs 3.60 crore nett). With this, it surpassed the opening-day records of Sairat and Timepass 2, both of which had collected around Rs 3.60 crore nett on Day 1.

The film’s performance has been largely driven by strong occupancy for its Marathi version across multiplexes and single-screen theatres in Maharashtra.

A review noted that the film stays true to the valour and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, delivering on scale and emotion, though it falls short in narrative precision. It continues to draw audiences interested in the historical figure and his legacy.

“Raja Shivaji” is currently running in theatres and is available in Hindi, Marathi, and Telugu.
