Mumbai, May 14: Excitement is building among Bollywood fans as fresh reports suggest that work has officially begun on the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan.

According to industry sources, the much-awaited follow-up has entered the pre-production stage, with the original lead trio — Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi — expected to reprise their iconic roles.

The sequel is reportedly being developed with a significant time leap, indicating that the story will revisit the beloved characters at a completely different phase in their lives compared to the original film.

However, one major mystery surrounding the project remains unresolved. While a time jump has been confirmed, it is still unclear whether the sequel’s storyline will take place before or after the events shown in the 2009 classic.

Sources claim that only Aamir Khan currently knows the exact narrative direction of the film. Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who directed the original movie, is also reportedly set to return to helm the sequel.

The original 3 Idiots became one of the most successful and influential films in Indian cinema history. Aamir Khan’s character Rancho emerged as a cultural phenomenon, admired for his unconventional thinking, humour, and inspiring outlook on education and life.

Apart from the lead trio, the film also featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, and Mona Singh in pivotal roles.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, 3 Idiots was not only a massive box-office success in India but also achieved worldwide acclaim, reportedly crossing Rs 400 crore in global collections and becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time.
