Mumbai, May 21: Actress Jyotika has said that while her Bollywood debut failed to make an impact, the South Indian film industry continued to believe in her talent and offered her several opportunities that eventually shaped her successful career.
Jyotika, who made her acting debut in Hindi cinema with Priyadarshan’s Doli Saja Ke Rakhna in 1998, said she may not have achieved the same level of success had she limited herself to Bollywood.

The actress, who later rose to stardom in Tamil cinema and became one of the industry’s leading actresses, recalled that both her Hindi and Tamil debut films had failed at the box office. However, the response from the two industries was very different.
“My first Hindi film didn’t do well at the box office, and the doors were immediately shut for me. At the same time, my first Tamil film also didn’t do well, but they looked at my work, and I got flooded with film offers after that,” Jyotika said during an interaction with Times Entertainment.
The actress said the South Indian film industry offered her a wide variety of strong roles during her early years as an actor.
“I have done certain films in the South when I was young, which I really don’t know if I would have had those choices if I were here in Bollywood,” she said.
Jyotika also pointed out that Bollywood currently handles female characters aged above 40 more sensitively compared to the South film industries.
“When I returned to Bollywood in my 40s, I felt that the way they are writing for women here… we still have to explore that space in the South. Female characters aged 40 and above are sensibly written here,” she added.
At the same time, the actress said both Bollywood and South cinema have their own strengths and limitations.
A five-time recipient of the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress, Jyotika remains one of the most successful actresses in Tamil cinema. During the 2000s, her popularity and box office pull often rivalled that of leading male actors.
Jyotika is currently preparing for the release of her upcoming Amazon Prime Video legal drama System, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. The film also stars Sonakshi Sinha and Ashutosh Gowariker in key roles.
She was last seen in Netflix’s crime drama series Dabba Cartel, alongside Shabana Azmi, Shalini Pandey, Nimisha Sajayan and others.
