Mumbai, May 25: As Shekhar Kapur’s iconic sci-fi superhero film Mr India marks 39 years since its release, actor Vardhaan Puri has paid tribute to the enduring legacy of his grandfather, Amrish Puri, whose portrayal of the villain “Mogambo” remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated performances.

Vardhaan said it is remarkable that even after nearly four decades, the character of Mogambo continues to evoke the same excitement and admiration among audiences across generations. He noted that very few roles manage to achieve such lasting cultural impact worldwide.

The actor praised Amrish Puri’s commitment to his craft, saying that he brought honesty and depth to every character he portrayed. According to him, Mogambo was more than just a villain—it became a cinematic emotion, especially for younger audiences, with his dialogues and expressions still widely remembered.

He added that the continued popularity of Mr. India reflects its status as a timeless cult classic, with Mogambo playing a major role in its enduring appeal as a family entertainer.

Expressing personal pride, Vardhaan said it is deeply fulfilling to see how his grandfather’s work continues to be respected and celebrated even today. He described Amrish Puri’s contribution to Indian and global cinema as truly legendary.

Released in 1987, Mr. India starred Anil Kapoor alongside Sridevi and followed the story of a simple man who discovers an invisibility device and uses it to fight evil forces led by Mogambo, who seeks to use it to dominate the country.

Amrish Puri, who acted in more than 450 films over his career, remains one of Indian cinema’s most iconic actors. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 72 after battling a rare blood disorder.
