Hardik Pandya ruled out of Afghanistan ODI series with quadricep injury

Mumbai, Jun 10: India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan after sustaining a low-grade quadricep sprain during training.
The injury comes as a setback for the 32-year-old, who was preparing to make his return to the ODI format after an absence of more than a year.

According to reports, Pandya had been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru since June 2 and was expected to join the Shubman Gill-led Indian squad in Dharamsala on June 11.

However, medical assessments revealed a mild quadricep strain, prompting the support staff to advise rest and rehabilitation.

"There has been a very late setback. He sustained a low-grade, mild quadricep sprain causing some tenderness. It's nothing long-term, but medical staff advised him to avoid any strain or weight-bearing for the next few days. Hardik will continue to stay in Bengaluru, consulting with Centre of Excellence physios and trainers during his recovery phase," a BCCI official was quoted as saying.

The injury is not believed to be serious, but Pandya is expected to remain in Bengaluru for at least two weeks under the supervision of the BCCI medical team.

His absence leaves the team management with a decision on whether to name a replacement for the ODI series.

The Indian team has already been informed of the development, with members of the ODI squad scheduled to assemble in Mohali before travelling to Dharamsala for the series.

Some players are expected to take part in an optional training session at the IS Bindra Stadium before the squad departs for the hill city.

Pandya's fitness will now be closely monitored as India looks ahead to a busy international calendar in the coming months.
