Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 23: Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan has said the government will consider strengthening Peroorkada District Model Hospital to improve healthcare accessibility and reduce overcrowding at major hospitals.
The announcement came after the minister held discussions with senior health officials regarding the development requirements of the hospital. During the review, he said the existing services at Peroorkada hospital should be utilised more effectively and expanding facilities would help reduce the burden on the medical college hospital.

As part of the proposed expansion, the hospital is expected to receive 100 additional beds. The government will also initiate steps to appoint additional staff to manage the increased patient flow and improve daily healthcare services.
The minister said the proposal to allocate more funds for the hospital’s dialysis unit would also be examined. The move is aimed at strengthening essential services for patients requiring renal replacement therapy.
To handle the increased number of patients during night hours, more doctors will be assigned for night duty, he added.
Following the review meeting, Muraleedharan visited the hospital’s emergency department and inaugurated a handheld tuberculosis detection machine, enhancing diagnostic facilities at the centre.
The minister said government hospitals are now providing facilities comparable to private hospitals and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing public concerns related to healthcare access and service delivery.
Hospital superintendent Dr Saritha Kumari L T, NHM State Mission Director Anu S Nair, NHM District Programme Manager Dr Arnold Deepak and District Medical Officer Dr Bindu Mohan were present during the meeting and hospital visit.
