IMV violation cases cross 21,000 in Mangaluru in five months, Rs 96.19 lac collected in fines

Mangaluru, Jun 26: Cases of motorists violating the provisions of the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act have witnessed a significant rise within the Mangaluru City police commissionerate limits, prompting the traffic police to intensify enforcement measures across the city.

As part of the special drive, a total of 21,039 traffic violation cases were registered and fines amounting to Rs 96,19,500 were collected from offenders from January to May 2026. 

Traffic police officials stated that violations of traffic regulations continue to be a major factor contributing to road accidents, resulting in fatalities and injuries. With major national highways, including NH-66, NH-75, NH-169 and NH-73 passing through the region, rash and negligent driving, overspeeding and disregard for traffic rules remain serious concerns.

Among the violations, 6,853 cases were registered under various traffic offences, attracting fines of Rs 29,28,200. Helmet-related violations accounted for a major share, with 4,479 riders booked for riding without helmets and fined Rs 22,00,300. In addition, 5,693 pillion riders were penalised for travelling without helmets, resulting in fines amounting to Rs 22,69,300.

The traffic police registered 1,078 no-entry violations, collecting fines of Rs 5,35,800, while 922 motorists were booked for displaying defective registration number plates and fined Rs 4,55,000.

A total of 555 cases of triple riding were recorded, attracting fines of Rs 2,77,700. Similarly, 389 traffic signal and red-light jumping cases resulted in penalties amounting to Rs 1,92,300.

The police also booked 372 motorists for reckless driving, collecting fines of Rs 3,68,800, while 334 parking offence cases attracted penalties of Rs 1,85,200. A total of 70 cases were registered for using mobile phones while driving, with fines amounting to Rs 96,800.

In addition, 18 overspeeding cases were detected, resulting in fines of Rs 18,000, while 19 motorists were booked for driving or riding without a valid licence and fined Rs19,000.

Action was also taken against motorists violating vehicle safety and noise regulations. The police registered 59 cases involving defective silencers, collecting fines of Rs 34,000. Likewise, 17 cases of shrill horn usage attracted penalties of Rs 8,100, while five cases of honking in prohibited zones resulted in fines amounting to Rs 2,500. A total of 31 motorists were penalised for the improper use of high-beam lights, with fines totalling Rs15,500.

The enforcement drive also detected 145 drunken driving cases, against whom legal action was initiated as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and relevant court procedures.

Traffic police officials have urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, wear helmets, avoid overspeeding and reckless driving, and follow road safety measures to help reduce accidents and ensure safer roads for all road users.
