Simple skincare, balanced diet can help prevent acne during monsoon: Dermatologist

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, Jun 26: Increased humidity, sweat, pollution and fluctuating temperatures during the monsoon season can trigger acne breakouts by clogging pores and increasing oil production, according to dermatologist Dr Geetika Srivastava.

Sharing tips to maintain healthy skin during the rainy season, Dr Srivastava said acne cases tend to rise significantly during the monsoon, but a few simple changes in skincare and lifestyle can help keep breakouts under control.

She advised people prone to acne to pay close attention to their diet. While seasonal fruits such as mangoes are nutritious, excessive consumption—particularly in the form of sugary milkshakes, desserts or smoothies—may contribute to acne in some individuals by causing spikes in blood sugar levels that can increase oil production and inflammation.

Instead, she recommended a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, nuts, seeds and adequate water intake, while limiting sugary drinks, refined carbohydrates, deep-fried foods and excessive dairy products.

On skincare, Dr Srivastava suggested following a simple routine consisting of a gentle cleanser, a lightweight non-comedogenic moisturiser and a broad-spectrum sunscreen. She cautioned against using multiple skincare products or complicated routines, as layering too many serums, creams and oils may clog pores and worsen acne.

She also advised using proven acne-fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide and azelaic acid, while avoiding frequent experimentation with new products, which can damage the skin barrier and lead to irritation.

For oily and acne-prone skin, she recommended applying a clay mask once or twice a week to absorb excess oil and keep pores clean. However, overuse should be avoided as it may dry out the skin and trigger increased oil production.

Dr Srivastava further stressed the importance of choosing lightweight, oil-free and non-comedogenic makeup products during the monsoon. She advised thoroughly removing makeup before bedtime, noting that sleeping with makeup on can significantly increase the risk of breakouts.

For individuals with persistent acne despite following a proper skincare routine, she suggested consulting a dermatologist for professional treatments such as acne-focused chemical peels, medi-facials and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, which can help reduce congestion, control oil production and improve overall skin health.

She concluded that maintaining healthy skin during the monsoon does not require an elaborate routine but rather consistent care through gentle cleansing, balanced nutrition, proper hydration, sun protection and timely medical advice when necessary.
