Mangaluru, June 27: Mangaluru South police have arrested two accused in a gold chain snatching case involving an elderly woman, while a third accused escaped from custody after allegedly attacking a police constable during transit.

The incident occurred at around 12.30 pm on June 14, when the woman was on her way to Suterpete. After alighting from a bus at the Ekkur bus stop, she was walking near the village accountant's office at Suterpete when two men arrived on a motorcycle.

Posing as strangers seeking directions, they suddenly snatched the 12-gram gold chain with a Lakshmi pendant from her neck and fled.

The stolen chain is estimated to be worth around Rs 1.5 lac. Based on the victim’s complaint, Mangaluru South police registered Crime No. 124/2026 under Section 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Acting on leads, police detained three suspects near Rosario School in Pandeshwar on the morning of June 26. During questioning, the trio allegedly confessed to their involvement in the chain snatching.

The accused have been identified as Altaf Hussain of Bagalkote; Mohammed Sahil alias Siddiqui (26), son of Babu Ahmed, a native of Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh; and Ravi Baura (38), son of Ratan Singh, a resident of Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh.

However, while being taken to the police station, Altaf Hussain allegedly attacked escorting police personnel, pushed them aside and escaped from custody. Police constable Vinayaka sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Police have registered a separate case (Crime No. 133/2026) against Altaf Hussain under Sections 121(1), 132 and 362 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A special team has been formed to trace the absconding accused, and his details have been circulated to police units across districts and states through the wireless network.

The remaining two accused, Ravi Baura and Mohammed Sahil alias Siddiqui, were produced before a court, which remanded them to 10 days’ police custody until July 6 for further investigation.

Police said the case was cracked swiftly under the supervision of the assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru Central sub-division. Further investigation is in progress.
