New Delhi, Jul 24: Prime Video’s ‘Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya’ brings the struggles of government schools to the screen through a blend of humour, emotion and social commentary. The series attempts to highlight the challenges faced by teachers and students while delivering an entertaining narrative.
The story revolves around Gyaneshwar Tripathi (Kay Kay Menon), a laid-back principal of a government school in Delhi’s Tinki Toli area. Accustomed to the school’s poor infrastructure and limited resources, his life takes an unexpected turn after a government scheme announces a special reward for principals of schools that achieve outstanding Class 10 board results.
The reward — a trip to Cambridge along with their spouses — motivates Gyaneshwar to take up the challenge of transforming Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, one of the lowest-performing schools in the city.
With the support of his team of teachers, Gyaneshwar begins working towards improving the school’s performance while facing several ground-level challenges, including lack of funds, poor attendance and shortage of teaching staff.
The series opens by portraying the reality of government schools. In a striking scene, officials from the Education Directorate searching for the school end up asking directions from a student working at a roadside tea stall. They later discover that regular classes have been disrupted as classrooms and a laboratory have been occupied for a local MLA’s daughter’s wedding.
As the principal forms a School Management Committee (SMC) to improve the school’s results, the team struggles to arrange funds for extra classes and motivate students towards education. A humorous yet realistic moment shows students admitting that they mainly attend school on Tuesdays for the midday meal’s kheer.
Written by Biswapati Sarkar, Akshay Nupur Pai, Tatsat Pandey and Meghna Srivastava, the series effectively mixes humour with serious issues surrounding the education system. It highlights challenges such as political interference, changing classroom regulations, lack of resources and teachers adapting to new methods of education.
Director Hemank Gaur keeps the storyline engaging for most parts, though the pace slows down in the later episodes, with some subplots failing to create the desired impact.
The technical aspects of the series remain impressive with simple yet effective cinematography. The visuals capture both the familiar charm of school life and the harsh realities of inadequate infrastructure, while the background score complements the narrative.
Kay Kay Menon delivers a memorable performance as Gyaneshwar Tripathi. His portrayal of a principal who gradually moves from personal ambition to genuine concern for his students forms the highlight of the series.
Abhimanyu Singh impresses as strict Hindi teacher Hansraj Meena, while Archana Puran Singh adds strength to the role of Urmila Devi, a political aide who helps the school overcome financial challenges.
Prachee Shah, Prasanna Bisht, Aitesh Gupta and Deven Bhojani deliver convincing performances. The supporting cast, including Kabir Sajjid and Aryan Prajapati, also make their presence felt.
Overall, ‘Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya’ is a heartfelt attempt to showcase the realities of government education while maintaining an entertaining tone. Despite minor flaws in pacing, the series succeeds in highlighting the dedication of teachers and the importance of providing better opportunities for students.
