Udupi, Oct 9: St Cecily’s English Medium Higher Primary School,(CBSE) hosted a two days Capacity Building Programme on Competency Based Assessment (Secondary level) on 8th and 9th October 2026. The programme brought together 60 teachers from the host school and Sri Mookambika Public School, Byndoor, for an enriching professional learning experience.
As the present- day teaching and assessment practices witness a significant paradigm shift, equipping educators with skills to foster experiential learning, creative & critical thinking and competency-based assessment has become the need of the hour. The two-day programme focused on enabling teachers to assess learners not merely on their ability to recall information, but on their capacity to apply knowledge, think critically, solve problems and demonstrate real-world competencies.































The expert insights from the esteemed resource persons- Sushma J Karkada, Faculty, Dr M.R.S.M. School, Thokur and Akshatha R Shenoy, Principal, Creative Global School, Karkala, made the training sessions enriching, interactive, practice-oriented and fruitful for all the participants.
On both days, the programme commenced with a melodious prayer. Vineetha Fernandes presented a brief profile of the resource persons and warmly welcomed everyone. The resource persons were presented with thoughtful token of the heartfelt gesture by the Principal, Sr Lathika A.C.
In the course of the two days, Sushma J Karkada and Akshatha R Shenoy skilfully engaged the teacher-participants with enriching inputs and hands- on activities curated to train educators to move away from rote memorization and design tasks that measure real-world skills, application of knowledge, analytical ability and conceptual understanding.
The key ideas explored during the workshop included: Question designing with open-ended, analytical, multi-disciplinary, and high-order thinking questions using tools like Bloom’s Taxonomy, Collaborative activities by working together to design competency-based questions and assessment tasks aligned with learning outcomes, Formative Tools such as developing rubrics for the assessment activity and Experiential and application-based assessment through creating opportunities for learners to demonstrate their understanding through real-life situations and meaningful tasks.
The workshop concluded on 9th October with vote of thanks by Sushmitha who expressed gratitude to the resource persons, school management and all participants for making the Capacity Building Programme meaningful.
The two-day programme was not merely a training exercise but a step towards reimagining assessment as a powerful tool to understand, empower and transform learners.
