India's Biggest Swami Vivekananda Monolithic Statue to Come up in Udupi

Media Release

Udupi, May 10: As a humble service to entire humanity and to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama (Bailur Math) has taken the initiative to erect a 100-ft tall monolithic statue of Swami Vivekananda in Bailur (Karkala), just a few kilometres away from Udupi city.

On completion, the statue shall claim itself to be the biggest monolithic statue in the country as well as in the world, which will be "Instrumental in awakening the Divinity lying dormant in Man and in spreading the universal message of  One World  of Love, Peace and Harmony among people and keep it alive for all the times to come," said Swami Vinayakanandaji Maharaj of the Ashram. The details of the project can be found at http://www.rkashrambailurmath.org.

This project, huge in terms of both scale and complexity, the engineering challenges involved and the man power involved to make it see day of light. The work for stone extraction has begun at a quarry in Jarkala,14 km away from the final erection site. The ever continuing blessing and support of all the Committee Members, unfailing support of the ashram inmates, admirers and well wishers as well as that of the local people, and government has been paramount in the beginning for the smooth conduction of the on-going phase I of the project. People are excited to be a part of this noble initiative and have welcomed the chance to positively contribute to it.

The site, which can be reached by road, is located merely 23 km from the historic town of Udupi and around 75 kms from Dharmasthala. This engineering feat adds one more feather to the cap of south Karnataka region, which is already well known for its numerous tourist attractions. The mammoth structure has the potential to attract and awe visitors from diverse backgrounds across the world.

According to Ashram sources, further plans are also afoot in developing around the statue a cultural, spiritual and educational centre, for global integration and serve the purpose of global youth awakening, spreading the ever shining message of Swami Vivekananda, propounding the inner divinity of man.

I don't know whether to feel excited. I feel, the real tributes to great people like Swamiji should be mega social service projects, projects to spread his message and something which will make sure a few lakh new youths re-dedicate atleast a day for serving the poor in relation to his birth anniversary. SRK Mutt should first focus on facilitating such opportunities on mass scale. Building mega monuments are ok, but should be given only secondary importance. See, the in-efficiency of the organization. There are two movies on the life of Swami Vivekananda produced by Madras branch of SRK Mutt as part of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations.

It was made after spending Millions of Rupees and after well advanced announcements. I heard that it was released in January this year in DVDs. I inquired about it at the branches od the Mutt in two cities in Kerala, and also in Bangalore. To my surprise I found that Mutt people in Kerala were not even aware of such movies produced by their counter parts in Chennai. In Bangalore I get a reply that it will in a month's time etc. Even after four months of the release I am yet to see a copy of that DVD. I feel that there is no proper effort in popularizing such potential educative material. This DVDs should have been used for screening in thousands of schools, colleges, resident's associations, social organizations etc etc.
In an year's time this process would help spread Swamiji's message to millions of people. And that too with negligible expenditure compared to projects like this statue. This kind of mega projects are ok after people make considerable advancement in material prosperity.
Neverthless definitely I would visit this place to pay my homage at his lotus feet, but I would have got thrilled to see a news like "150 lakh youths to witness Swami Vivekananda Movie in his 150th birth anniversary year"
    Pranams !

Oh... what a tribute to a great saint..who has preached real Hinduism..that is way of life. Had present leaders followed some percentage of the preaching of Swami... there would not have been demolitions of religious sites of any religion. " LET PEACE PREVAIL IN OUR MULTICULTURAL COUNTRY"

This would be a popular tourist place, of a well acclaimed Reverend of India, Internationally.

Swami Vivekananda is considered to be a major force in the revival of Hinduism in modern India. His guru, Ramakrishna, taught him Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) that all religions are true and that service to man was the most effective worship of God. He travelled to Chicago USA and represented India as a delegate in the 1893 Parliament of World Religions. He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech which began: "Sisters and Brothers of America," through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893. He conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating Vedanta and Yoga in America, England and Europe. He also established the Vedanta societies in America and England...

Swami Vikananada is the first one to tell "All religions are equal and we are humans first" in Sarva Dharma Sammelana in Chicago. Few religion heads were in blind impression of superiority of their religion over others.

Hindu religion never says we are superior. There is no mention of religion in our epic Bhagavadgeete. Hinduism is very different from other religions. That is why even foreigners love Hindu/Indian culture.

    Teach humanity, practice humanity.

Hindu Dharma has a glorious past of great Saints and Sages. Several Saints ascended to the state of Guru and showed the path of God realisation to many. They also taught spirituality to the society through their conduct and actions. Their mission was not just limited to spirituality but they also did substantial work for the defence of nation whenever it was in difficulties. Some of the Saints travelled all over the world and disseminated the spiritual knowledge of Bharat there without any personal expectations. Millions of people abroad are getting benefit of that. For last lakhs of years, the Sages took tremendous efforts to preserve the Vedic Knowledge which is the pride of Bharat. They also created many subjects connected with the human life and made it easy. The most important thing however is that the Saints of Bharat have donated the world the tradition of Guru-disciple.

It must have been the divine plan to allow this saint to introduce the world to the great Hindu Dharma. Swami Vivekanand aproved to be a true representative of Hinduism as he made his fervent appeal for tolerance to the whole world from the dais of the World Parliament of Religions at Chicago.

Swamiji felt that the Hindu Samaj has the potential to become the spiritual teacher to the world. After centuries someone had again shown to the Hindu society its own wide horizons. Yet Swamiji did not criticise any religion. He did not degrade any religion. He only wiped the dirt that had accumulated on the Hindu Dharma owing to its ill-treatment and affronts at the hands of its invaders. He showed Hindu Dharma its own irradiant self and placed it on the highest pedestal of the World Parliament of Religions. Hindusthan it is a sacred land, a land with a divine purpose. Hindusthan is the abode of spirituality and introspection. Right from the ancient ages, founders of religious tenets were born here.

History repeats itself - it's from Karnataka of our great freedom fighters/saints. Jai Karnataka.
