Mangalore, May 13: A MESCOM employee was electrocuted while on work at Vamanjoor near here on Saturday May 12. The deceased has been identified as Gerald Veigas (35), son of Thomas Veigas, a resident of Thokur Village. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Gerald who was on duty on Saturday was checking for faults in Vamanjoor area as there was no power from 2.30 pm. He fixed two poles and while he was fixing the third pole, electricity suddenly passed through the wire and he got electrocuted, where he died on the spot.

MESCOM officials say that generator connection in any house either switched on manually or automatically tends electricity to pass through the high tension wire which might be the reason for death.

Why the LOTO [ Lock out, Tag OUT ] procedure was not followed to carryout safe system of work?? While working with Electricity this is mandatory. An unauthorized person who is not involved in this team work operation should not be encouraged. The lead man of this task should strongly communicate and ensure no connections are made by providing adequate supervision.
May the victims soul rest in Peace & God give strength to his family.

May his soul rest in peace. It was a terrible incident to look at as it happened in front of my house. Regarding the statement made by MESCOM, A normal household generator produces maximum of 440 to 1kW of power. He died touching a High Transmission wire(H.T) which was carrying 1100kW of power. This kind of power is handled only by KPTCL. The Statement of MESCOM is a cover up to avoid their mistake of switching power in to a HT line when the deceased was still on the pole and fixing the jumper. The deceased was under the influence of high power for nearly half an hour as his body was still burning on the pole. I request MESCOM not to cover up this issue giving meaning less reasons. Conduct a proper inquiry, punish the person who switched on HT power line when the deceased was still on the electric pole.

RIYAZ, Dubai/Mangalore. PLs read the statement of MESCOM. "..... generator connection any of house.... death". This case(If it is true) would have been prevented if (as I said in my comment) "Change over switch" installed.

Reasons given by MESCOM officials is not convincing. There has to be protection relays for reverse flow of power. Moreover whenever working on any line it has to be earthed before any work is taken up so as to protect personnel from accidental energizing of line.

What a rubbish statement by MESCOM they must be out of their mind to issue such a statement. AS per their statement they cannot repair any electric lines. There are hundred's of houses and hundred's of generator's, it is very likely that many of them will be starting the generators in case of power failure, if so how can any one work on the lines. MESCOM Officials will be losing only a employee which will be replaceable, but the employee's familly has lost someone who cannot be replaced, the Officials should understand this concept and act accordingly so that no more people will loose their Lives. May the departed soul rest in peace and God give strength to the family to bear the loss and the pain.

MESCOM, be aware that the safety of the personnel is of prime importance then comes the duty. Statement from MESCOM officials that the generator connection was either switched on manually or automatically shows how irresponsible these ignorant staff are!!!This is the height of stupidity. Wake up MESCOM wake up........ In which century are you living in???? Trying to fool around the people??

Awareness has not yet dawned in India to use safe tools while operating machinery, electricity etc. Last year on a visit to the Toyota factory near Mysore, I was shocked to see the electrician there repairing lights using a non insulated screwdriver. If this can happen in a Japanese company, we can be rest assured that most of our technicians/ electricians use cheap junk tools. In the west the government is very strict but in India as with everything else it is simply chalta hai. In the end we have tragedies such as these happening on a regular scale.

I can give you names of top companies using cheap junk. One of them is MRPL which is very close to us. I know this because I have visited their workshops and met their officials. They just told me that the parent company ONGC goes for cheap tools and therefore they were not in a position to do anything. At MCF they informed me that even though they were using junk in the past, they are now changing to quality tools as they are an ISO company and therefore have to adhere to ISO standards. I had met them 2 years ago and am not sure if they have changed by now.

Sad News n Great Loss specially to his family n children's. In a beautiful way the MES-COM exit from the problem, but in reality if we go through the truth will come out. (Negligence) In one word can say it's a destiny and no one can stop "ALMIGHTY" 's call. Anyway, will pray for his family, 'MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE ' May God grant peace n strength to his Family, to bear the loss of loved Husband /Father.

Seems to be MESCOM skip from their responsibility. Put blame to others. If electrocuted by reverse flow of electricity from home generator, why MESCOM didn’t introduced strict rule to install “CHANGER-OVER” switch whoever installing generator set at home. But hard to believe, that High tension shock. Normally during maintenance HT switch will be at off position and even though transformer set-up the voltage, it will not pass though HT line as it is in off position.
