Mangalore: Miscreants Pelt Stones at Holy Hill, Damage Property

Bishop Condemns Attack on Holy Hill, Commissioner Swings into Action

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 25: Dr Aloysius Paul Dsouza, Bishop of Mangalore has condemned the stone-pelting incident at Holy Hill, near Nantoor on here Monday June 25.

"This is a clear effort towards disrupting peace in the society. I am pained to hear of this incident today and I condemn the stone-pelting and damaging of property at prayer places like Holy Hill," he said.

"We have made numerous appeals to the authorities against the attacks on Christian churches and prayer centres, still we do not see any strict action from the authorities concerned. The incidents are recurring on a regular basis," he added.

The bishop once again appealed to the district administration to give suitable protection to religious places and to the entire Christian community.

Congress leader Ivan D'Souza, International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA) president Denis D'Silva, Mandd Sobhann president Stany Alvares, and others visited the spot and also condemned the act by miscreants.

Meanwhile, Mangalore city police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh informed daijiworld that three special teams have been formed to trace the culprits who damaged the Holy Hill property. Rural police station inspector Ravish Naik, CCB inspector Venkatesh Prasanna and Bunder police station inspector Vinay Gaonkar, are leading the teams.

"We are confident that, soon we will nab the culprits" said Seemanth Kumar

It is learnt that the miscreants entered the Holy Hill premises after the prayer service which usually ends at 7 pm and damaged the alter, flower pots and various other items.

The incident came to light when a neighbour came to switch off the lights on Monday June 25 morning. He passed on the information to Paul Rodrigues, managing director of Holy Hill.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Melwyn D’Silva, in-charge of Holy Hill said that the police arrived at the spot and cleaned up the place before the media could arrive.

Police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, DCP Dharmaiah and ACP Jagannath inspected the spot.

Let me bring to the notice that the normal citizens in our country respect all religion and our faith is respected the most. This is surely the work of the local political activist who wants to make some mark in the society, they feel this way they make publicity for their movement.

Our Continent of Asia has been a cradle to many world religions, spiritualities and cultural ways of worldmaking. Major world movements such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Confucianism, Zorasterism and Christianity have all originated in spiritually vibrant Asia. The founders and mentors of all these movements came from different parts of Asia.

Our people in India have been pioneers in the art of peace-making and peace-keeping. Prayer, sacrifice, solidarity, fellow feeling and respect for the other have been the major weapons in the tool-kit of our Society. We need to thank the Giver of Life and try and respect the sacred places of our fellow citzens so that all can journey through life without unneccesary hiccups.

The Holy Cross was erected as written by some one to commemorate the difficulties the earlier Christians had to bear under the Tippu rule. It was a sign of victory in memory of the courage shown by them during their difficult times. It was no harm to any religion. Exploitation of the structure is highly condemnable since it is a question of reliability of the religion in the surroundings. What harm could it do to any passer by as even after being written at the place only for the purpose of prayer in times of need?

nagesh nayak, bangalore, comments are right this time. Looking at the pictures, the damage to property is negligible, just the flower pots broken, also the fact that the police could clean up the place before the media could arrive, certainly shows the damage was not worth mentioning. In this case, I partly agree with him. Christianity is not limited to a statue or some physical thing. These miscreants are hell bent to create tensions between Christians and Hindus, 99.9% of whom have best relationship with Christians. Lets not waste time with these incidents and clean up asap and give them a message that they cannot affect us in any way. May our LORD give them some sense.

Dave: Glad for defending, Thank you. It is easy to raise doubts & questions in ignorance but difficult to grasp in humility without enough knowledge. Throughout the ages enormous people have tried hard to destroy the faith with such doubts but instead flourished. The Catholic Church never bent and compromised on human commands but the Devine. That is why there are many denominations and others where differ themselves but not the Catholicism. All questions literally even they do not know and act anti-Christian otherwise they have to follow. Doubts to be cleared with the one concerned & qualified and not to debate in this type open form, abusing way.

Some run away ignorantly or arrogantly. Great are the treasures hidden in the scriptures beyond human wisdom, which can’t be interpreted so easily by anyone! I want to end with what Jesus said “do not doubt but believe”. So let us go back to the news topic.

In the Year 2006, one Mr. Faizal was killed by some miscreants in Kerala and blame game started ever since by accusing RSS Activists. Six Years passed but last month Kerala Police arrested 2 CPI(M) Leaders for murder charges of Mr. Faizal. That also Late Mr. Faizal’s wife herself sought CBI Investigation by refusing earlier version of Kerala Police regarding murder charges.

In Malegaon Blast case, Maharashtra ATS Team arrested 6 Muslim youths and detained them for 5 years in Jail only to release after they came to know that Sadhvi Ritambara & Team involved in Blast case. In earlier Mangalore Church Attack cases, real culprits not yet known but blame put on few “Sena” people after conducting so many investigation efforts.

Here again who is doing what nobody knows. Instead of relying on Police Department, better our Community should appoint few likely minded people from all religious to investigate secretly the incidents happening like this. Let the truth come out openly and then our Government takes actions according to Law of the Land and we being responsible citizen should ban those culprits from our civilized society for ever

We should not blame anyone, until the real culprits are caught for which 3 police teams have been formed. Please have patience and do not speculate. Besides this is not a forum to express your religious beliefs and disbeliefs. To express your beliefs and disbeliefs there are proper forums. Next to University of Leeds in UK there is a beautiful chapel which may be around 500 years old, but now the chapel is converted into a pub. later I came to known young Brits do not believe in any religion and people do not visit churches,.......forget sundays majority of them do not attend mass even on Christmas eve. So obviously most of the churches lacked devotees and eventually they have closed down.
Initially I had a very awkward feeling regarding the Brits, But later I realized what if they dont have faith in any religion... they are much happier than we Indians...They dont fight in the name of religion, Their least bothered about this sick topic. Monday to Friday they will work, weekend party... thats it.

Let us not give importance to such incidents, stop reacting to such acts, try to understand its politically motivated, Religion is a major political issue in our country.

We just need to change how we react to the negative situation and channel the emotions that seep through into a more positive reaction.

My above comment is not to hurt any religious sentiments and it applies to all religions, Tommorow some Miscreants may throw stone on temple or mosque.....lets try to ignore such acts and involve ourselves in day to day work. Take my words daiji will have no business.

Its just a small effort to change the rule of the game.

Did they succeedeed, do they will succeful in future. We humans has no clue all about except Lord Jesus can helP. Jesus died on cross for us and his followers has to suffer like Jesus for greater joy at some point. People Jesus had never blamed anyone even though people killed him. So life goes on and these evils attacks us but they will loose. One day same men will call upon Jesus for help and that time we christians feel pity on such people and shelter them in our houses.

That is what we are for to help, serve. We are the servant of lord and peace makers and not breakers that is why we are rich in peace. God bless all and let us pray for the attackers to surrender to Jesus for forgiveness and surely they will do it front of the same attacked cross. mark my words.

    A Bit of History:
At one of the Mangalore’s gateways of yesteryears, on Nantoor Padav Hills, stands a large Cross erected during mid nineteen hundreds by Bishop Victor Fernandes in memory of martyrs of the ‘Kanara Captivity”. Thee captives led in captivity through the Nanthoor hills, the Western Ghats Jamalabaad Ghada, Mudigere, taken to Srirangapattana after Mangalore fort was surrendered by Campbell. Hence this is a historic monument and is time we put up a plaque with details.

The captivity lasted 15 years and of the 60 thousand prisoners, barely 10, 000. returned after the 4th Mysore war in 1799. Historian Jerome Saldanha, on the eve of the first centennial anniversary in 1899 called the 100 years as the golden era people who regained the position they enjoyed before the capture.

In his letter, Fr. Joaquim Manoel Miranda of Monte Mariano, Farangipet convent Antegualhas, Fascisculo describes the events prior and during the captivity:

“On February 24, 1784 Ash Wednesday, all Kanara Christians were taken prisoners.... The Christians of Nagar (Bednur) have been banished to Chitradurga and the others of Kanara, about 40,000. have been taken to Seringapatana. A number of these died of small pox able men were circumcised and joined to Tipu’s Ahmadi’ corps of foot soldiers.

Tipu himself gives an account in his Memoirs, of the arrest of Kanara Christians:
“The port of Kûriâl (Mangalore) fell into our hands the trechery of the Pâdries known to us, and we directed the Dewân to prepare a “list of all houses occupied by all the Christians. The officers with the Mûtusuddies of Soonda, Nugr (Bedenur), Kûriâl (Kodiyal) prepared a detailed report on the subject.”
Of the nearly 60,000 combined captives of North and South Kanara, barely 10,000 returned from captivity after the 4th Mysore war, in which Tipu was shot and killed and all the captives were released.
Cross is the sign of suffering. We are persecuted all over the world.

Thank you for your mature comments. You rightly pointed out that, these are sensitive issues & this is not the right place to discuss them. Though I agree with your suggestions to maintain peace, yet personally I wish to thank Daijiworld, for giving us the opportunity to discuss these sensitive issues, where by, readers can know, the developments in catholic faith, as to what the clergy teaches, and the diversity of thoughts among the faithful.

If we want to discuss these issues with the priests & nuns, they & people under their influence, will never let you do it, fearing they will loose their authority over the faithful.

They will proclaim to the faithful, only those issues, which will keep the faithful ignorant of the facts written in the Bible, & make the faithful always scared to discuss sensitive issues & make them totally dependent on the clergy to fulfil their religious needs.

I think it is a good idea, & good for the faithful, to discuss these issues openly, in a educative & gentle manner, based on facts/faith & not fanatically based on emotions. This will make us all, important part of chritsianity & direct the religion to follow the right path, that God wants us to follow, as thought by Jesus.

Note: If only the christians had strong faith in God, and valued serving God more than their lives. No one would dare to attack christians or christian places of worship.

We are cowards when it comes to physically fighting for our rights at the cost of our lives.

Many christians who fought bravely for the honour of our religion during the last communal fight, were left to fend for themselves, without a united christian force to release them from prison or see that the cases filed on them were nullified immidiately, instead of years. It is important to show our physical strength, both to the miscreants and the police as well, that we will not tolerate such nonsense in the future, instead of just condemning by words.

as far as once faith is concerned.
However, it is wrong to blame anyone at this juncture,
    although hypotheses could be many.
Therefore, Dear Dave, N. Frank, Frank, Kenny...
let us not open a new window for 'idols' which is not the need of the hour.
Devil knows the scriptures better than you and me, but they do not follow it. In case we follow it, this is not the right place to discuss which shows how really we are weaker than those who actually destroyed those idols because we too sow the seed of discord between us. It is also called as statueless idol or idol of hindrance setting bad examples on once faith and inter-faith.

    Dear Dave Mangalore
You are totally wrong about your interpretations on my comments. My comments are not based on my own imaginery thoughts. They are all from the scriptures. Nothing of my own.

I have not discussed, but confronted the priests and Nuns, based on my understanding of the scriptures, as to why the clergy is not telling the truth about God and ways to worship God without intermediaries to the people.

The answer I got was, Frank you are right, but the people are not educated, to understand the way you understand the things written in the Bible. Therefore my dear Dave, you go and check with your priest, whether my thoughts are meaningful or yours. After that you are welcome to comment on my comments. Thank you.

My thoughts against idol worship is based item 1 and 2 of the 10 commandments, given by God to Moses. Also Jesus prayed without any idols of God in front of him, Nor did he ask his followers to pray using idols, Jesus in fact broke the idols from the places of worship.

I see there is a lot of debate on idol worship by readers. Idol worship may be considered as wrong by some and right by a few others. Some christian denominations, some muslim sects some hindu groups believe in idol worship. Others may not believe in idol worship ( reverence or whatever it is called). One must know to respect others views. Because u do not believe in something, you do not have right to desecrate others places of worship or statues.

Idol worship depends on the person and society cannot decide that all must believe in only one way of worshiping. As far as Bible or any other holy scripture, one must know that the statements on idol worship are contextual and need not be applied as it is. Idol worship is correct because I can garlan God . How will I if there is no statue. This is one example.

I can provide strong arguments in favour of idol worship. Anthropomorphism is very much a part of Human worship whether one uses statues or not. there fore it is very clear that those who think that idol worship or reverence is wrong are only intellectualizing the argument and think themsleves to be greater than or right while others are wrong. This is the first wrong step a person takes in spiritual journey - others are wrong and I am correct

    Dear Dave, Mangalore,

What to call those when scriptures clearly states/confirms and yet doesn’t want to believe and misinterpret?

Psalms 115.4-8 4 Their idols are mere silver and gold, made by human hands. 5 They have mouths, but they can't speak they have eyes, but they can't see 6 they have ears, but they can't hear they have noses, but they can't smell 7 they have hands, but they can't feel they have feet, but they can't walk with their throats they can't make a sound. 8 The people who make them will become like them, along with everyone who trusts in them.

    Nagesh Nayak and Shiva,

The number dislikes on your comments itself proves how straight forward and matured people you are. Because of RSS/VHP/BD/SRS India is devided. Why your sangh parivar is not going to our borders to defend it from Pakistan and Bangladesh. You people are scared to shit. You people are good only in minority bashing. By the way whats the contribution of sangh parivar to our nation....? Nothing... A big zero..only hate, venom and devision. Did RSS fight the British Raj? No. not at all. Golwalker was an agent of British and British used him to hate Gandhiji and Indian National Congress. The legacy of Golwalder is being practiced and followed by present day RSS by hating Sonia and Congress. How dare you call her a foreigner when your own culture says that after the marriage the women belongs to her husbands land? Are you defying your won culutre?? You people are brainless and good in hating. Hate is nothing but destruction. I dont care for whats happening in foreign countries. Its their look out. I am concerned about my India. India belongs to me and my children as much as it belongs to you and your family members. We dont need certificate of patriotism from fanatics and communuals like you people. I carry Indian blood in my veins and shall live Indian and die Indian. You are psuedo Indian and a Pakistani and American agent in our holy soil. As long as people like you are around us, we are not safe. For our safety need of the hour is total elimination of people like you. The day is not far..Have patience. Have you ever heard of vedic slogan "sarvajana sukhino bhavanthu" which is core of real hinduism. You are just going against the teachings of vedas.

    Dear Frank,KSA-
I had previously given a suggestion not to interpret scriptures & arrive at conclusion from our limited knowledge as literal interpretations always give contradictory conclusions.
I request you to discuss your doubts or interpretations with a KNOWLEDGEABLE priest rather than listening to some lambs already gone astray leading others to doom defying the Church established by Jesus himself.
If you don't like any rituals or traditions then don't, but thinking Holy Spirit has revealed everything to you & trying to teach us anything new- then please, we are more enlightened than you in this regard.
This forum is not the right one to voice our view points regarding religion. I request you to join F B forums like We r catholics where these things get very good answers.
May God Enlighten you in right path.

Quran recognizes the Jewish and Christian faiths and teaches respect for the followers of these sister religions. The Quran recognizes the truth contained in the doctrines of Judaism and Christianity, and it confirms Abraham, Moses, Jesus and others as true prophets who preceded Muhammad.

The Quran teaches tolerance and is explicit in directing its followers to respect all other faiths.

The birth of Jesus to a virgin mother is narrated in the Quran and is a part of the Islamic belief. Mary is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran. "Oh Mary ... God has chosen you above all the women in the world" (Quran 3:42).

In your hinduism y dont you all allow dalits to enter the temples, y do you all ill treat them so much. Whereas in Christians and Muslims v never do so, We give equal preference to all. Don’t create fights, misunderstandings between religions. Nagesh/Dinesh/Rakesh your comments are always cruel and evil. Atleast for once think good.

Regarding this incident also none of us know who is behind all this work, but this shows they are coward and really bad to see all this. So there is no point blaming anyone unless the complete investigation is done.

God has always told forgive them who don’t know what they are doing. But a day will come where everyone will have to bare the tough punishments.

It is strange to notice that the “Sangh Parivaar” nowadays wants to spoil its own name and image. It wants itself termed as band of fanatics by mere pelting stones, breaking windows and flower pots of some unmanned religious installations and hurt the sentiment of the many believers. It always wants be in the breaking news of Daijiworld for wrong reasons and seems to enjoy all the negative comments of the readers.

It also wants to give easy feed the Honorable Governor, who several times pushed for Article 376 in the state for the very same reason. It wants to do maximum damage to BJP’s vote bank and to give undue favors to the Congress during its most difficult period. It is really strange and sad to notice a true “Hindu” with an ideology of “Sarva Dharma Samata Bhava” catch up such a silly decease from the day one of the first BJP rule.

There is no beginning or end to the preachings of great personalities. They preach universal truths. The life truths may not be acceptable to our thoughts. The statues/holy places are the imagination of some super power of a section people. The people who damged the statue/ place which people gather for prayer, must read the teachings, prominance of christ in real life.and understand the truths of life. When live body of christ destroyed,no body was able to stop his preachings. The present act will also strengthen the faith of the people and unite people.we belive in one god and we destroy imaginery pictures of God and not real God.The people who intend to destroy principles/statues of great personalities, and not their great works.

If we have better priciples then we should bring great ideas to public forum and if acceptable to all we can also install their statue for their great ideas to life. The present act will repeat when society does not accept their ideas. So dear friends submit your preachings and statue

Some where in another day RSS man Prabhakar Bhat will say some children threw a stone to Mango mistakenly hit to the statue of Jesus and the hand cut off and fell down (Remember Mangos are there on the trees till June end sometimes mid July also). They cannot highlight good works of bjp like India shining campaign and very silly things coming in the media.

He loves them too. let's not judge so that we too may not judged by God on final day. Those who are faithful they will fly like angels n enter the kingdom of God. Those left behind will suffer at the hands of Satan. Despite that those who still Stay loyal to God will be saved from he'll.

In fact the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. I(Jesus) have told you this so that you might have peace in me(Jesus). In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I(Jesus) have conquered the world."
Same Christianity too. Proudly I want to say, i have many friends from all faiths but i have not come across any such evil oriented person so far...infact they help by keeping their faith. Then who are these elements working against God day and night ?

Sodom and Gomorah were evil places and therefore were destroyed by the Lord. Therefore don't say every place is holy. Wherever there is a confluence of people who join together in prayer, there is a strange magnetism to that place and it becomes holy and miracles occur there among people who visit such places with utmost faith.

It is true of places like Benaras, Mecca, Madina, Lourdes, Vellankani, Dharmastala, Shiridi etc. This is not restricted to one faith. We all know that God is one but is worshipped in different ways and forms by different religions.

Why do we need a middle man. Cant we pray directly to God. In the bible itself it has been mentioned Pray & U shall receive,Seek & u shall find &

Whovever commits a criminal act on any religious place of worship belonging to any religion is SELF inviting a curse from the almighty upon him. Today the person may feel proud and pumped up for doing such an act, but he fails to realize that the curse will work either on him during his lifetime or on his family in some way or the other. Places of worship are sacred and carry a lot of sentiments and beliefs. We can notice different sections of society, different denominations, worshipping at different places of worship because all believe in the power of the almighty.

Truth that proved Police are RSS servents to clean up the places before media arrived?
Truth that mangalore has become communal after BJP rule in state?
I tell you, the Truth is that we never counter attack and you take it for granted. Truth is that cowards can only attack in the night.

The signs of sarvanaash of the next political game. We do not have a clear majority state government but we have indirect government representatives to come and show their presence at holy places of worship. There is no majority if you count the jailed MLA’s and the MLA’s with Eddy team.As per today situation If any day DVS asked to prove majority then the state government will fall and go for elections.

Bharat, Mangalore, Your comments says, you can destroy statues and places, not the crearor.

Meaningful thoughts. That is why the creator has made it known to the people through the prophets, not to make any pictures of the creator or statues of the creator.

Displaying the cross/statues of Mary, Saints in public or private should not be done. Worshipping of the creator, should be from within, and not by looking at the pictures or statues.

Regarding holy hill, everything that the creator has created is holy. Holy hill cannot be different from any other place in the world. Stop calling places of worship as holy and fool the people.

"PLEASE LORD FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY ARE DOING" AMEN.

They are our neighbours, they are our brethren. Many of them who did this damage to another religious place, may be our neighbours and the parents of those who did this may be very nice, peace loving people and not aware of their children's such activity.
If they come to know what their children are involved in, they will feel miserable indeed.
May the good Lord show these lost sheep the way home.

One can attack and destroy the religious places and symbols, but surely one cant destroy the faith of the believers. Such acts bring lots of courage and strength and only reinforce the faith and belief. At the end trouble creators surely will lose and truth shall always prevail...Love can bring in peace and prosperity and hate only brings destruction.

People who attack Temples, churches or mosques invite curse on themselves, miscreants may hide from the people but cannot hide the eyes of the almighty.Miscreants think they are hurting people but they are hurting the almighty also.Through all this attacks our faith does not weaken. If they had guts let them do it in front of us.May the Lord forgive them and change their lives like Saul into Paul or else i cannot imagine the curse they are inviting.

This is all happening because we got the most communual govt in our state... The most peace loving, most non violent and most service to the society oriented christian community is being targetted by the communual minded people and their organisations. Look at the service this selfless community does to the society and to the humanity..I only pray to God that let this community multiply many fold to survive such attacks and to serve the humanity and society... LOng live christians and their off springs..

There can not be a better message to such acts than Christ himself in all His divine love, care & mercy said - "forgive them, for they know not what they are doing".

Isn't it time to ponder the stark message of the great soul of M.K. Gandhi that - "Tolerance of other faith itself is a test of one's faith".

It is the fear, inferiority or mean-ness that gives vent to such behavior.

    So, where are we heading?

The board at the gate says "ENTRY ONLY FOR THE PRAYERS". When you enter here for other illegal activities, you are spoiling the spiritual places and consequently you get punished for the same.

This is just the beginning...  When the Goodness is above evil, these thing are to happen.  Surely, this place (Holy Hill) has paved way to find God to many, in their own religion (i know a few personally).

History has it, wherever the Cross has been defamed, things have changed and suffering has come. Not only to places, but countries. You can destroy statues and places.. not the creator.

Why the Police are so interested in cleaning before the media arrives? maybe they were giving protection to the miscreants ??
