Cuba squad leaves for regional karate championship

Havana, April 16 (IANS): The Cuban karate team left from Havana to participate at the XIV Centro-American and Caribbean Championship of the discipline to be held in Nicaraguan capital Managua April 16-21.

The Cuban team, which left Monday, has four girls and five men, reports Xinhua.

The women's team is comprised by Doralvis Delgado (55 kg), Baurelis Torres (50 kg), Yanet Franquiz (61 kg), and Cirelis Martinez (68 kg) under trainer Eliecer Penalver.

The men's squad is headed by national champion and Pan American silver medallist Dennis Novo (67 kg), who is accompanied by his brother Damian (84 kg), Listmar Licea (60 kg), Lester Zamora (75 kg), and Jander Tiril ( 84 kg) under head coach Francisco Garcia Almenares.

The Cuban karate selection took part in the recent X Centro-American Games in Costa Rica but without any golden medal. Thus, the team has the mission now to inverse that situation.
