Mumbai, Jan 1: Borivli resident Nareshkumar Jani (65) was reportedly killed last night after a skirmish with thugs in the Jaipur-bound Aravali Express, which left Bandra at 8 pm.

Around midnight, four robbers armed with revolvers and knives entered the general compartment — the last bogey of the train — at Wapi.

They snatched a mobile phone from a passenger identified only as Salim, also a Mumbaikar, and went on to threaten and rob the rest of the passengers.

The Valsad police said that the thugs were furious when some passengers, including Jani, pulled the emergency chain near Pardi, Gujarat, around 12.30 am. In the skirmish that followed, Jani was hit on the head with a sharp weapon, said police sources.

Another passenger, Safi Pinjara (46) from Ajmer, was injured as well. Pinjara was returning home from Mumbai. When two railway protection force jawans raised an alarm, the thugs fled the train at Pardi with their loot.

Jani and Pinjara were taken to a hospital in Valsad but succumbed to their injuries. Jani, said railway sources, was traveling to Jaipur. The Gujarat police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
