Yesterday it was reported as suicide due to depression and threats. Today Mangalore police report as accidental ! Well famous and influential can change things even after death ! But look at the irony "Man falls into well, survives 12-hour ordeal braving heavy rain" Poor survive but Bhandary couldnt !

I am sick and tired of people thinking depression is something one can just snap out of. No one asks a cancer patient or a diabetic to 'snap out of it' so why are mental disorders not treated by our aam aadmis as illnesses? We have so much empathy for somebody with cancer or diabetes. Justified. Why can’t we have an aorta of that empathy for someone whose brain – that most important organ which sees to the functioning of every cell – may be affected by genetics, chemical imbalances, infection? We don’t expect somebody with cancer to snap off those offending overgrowing cells. We don’t expect glucose levels to snap back to stable. Why do we expect somebody suffering from a mental disorder like depression to be able to fix himself?

I have some suggestions for aam aadmis. When you see neighborhood children throwing stones at some poor beggar, whose family abandoned him because they were ignorant, stop the children don’t join them in laughing at someone’s misfortune. When you hear of somebody being locked up because they were “crazy” and siblings suddenly became rich, don’t befriend those siblings. When a “buddhu” girl gets raped because she doesn’t know what’s happening, don’t join the rest of the world is calling her a prostitute. When somebody says he’s sad, don’t ask him to snap out of it.

Very aam things that any aam aadmi should be able to do. Instead, we as a society shun these “sad and crazy” people. And because of the taboos, the shame we attach to their illness, these sick people are supposed to pretend everything is ok, even when their brains are failing them every single day, when they don’t have control over their actions or when they are being exploited because of it.

India has enough aam aadmis, it’s time we became khaas. Khaas log who will stop being indifferent to other people’s misfortunes who won’t hasten to judge, but educate ourselves first who will try to understand, and if we can’t, then try to empathize. We are blessed, our brains work.
