Kundapur, Jun 17: State urban development and Udupi district in-charge minister, Vinay Kumar Sorake, revealed that a proposal for providing underground drainage system to the town is before the government. He expressed the confidence that this plan will get approval of he government during this fiscal.

He was speaking after accepting the felicitation extended to him by Kundapur regional unit of Catholic Sabha at the premises of St Mary’s School here on Saturday June 15.

The minister reasoned that his party was elevated to power by the people, because of the secular principles to which it has committed itself. “Our government has decided to lay emphasis not only on developing the urban areas, but also upliftment of slum dwellers. Our government will give preference to any scheme or project which can bring smiles on the faces of poor classes of the society. When I was the MP representing this region, I had got several projects sanctioned to Kundapur.  Projects like providing concreted bus stand, and permanent drinking water plan for the town from River Varahi, have already been completed. Underground drainage project is the prime need of a town that is growing fast, and this will be provided at any cost,” he declared.

Sorake hailed Christian community for the contribution it has made to education sector in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. He promised to extend assistance to organizations led by high ideals to the extent feasible, and within his capacity. “The people wanted a change, and brought Congress to power. We are committed to provide transparent and corruption-free governance. We will never be found lagging in discharging our duties, and development will be out main agenda,” he added.

Priest, Fr Anil D’Souza, presided. Speaking after honouring the minister, said that education alone can bring transformation in the society. He stressed the importance of working together with single-minded concentration for achieving a specific goal. “If we consciously work for a change, we can make it happen. Let us change ourselves first, and be role models for others, before taking up the task of transforming others. Catholic Sabha has been functional in 48 churches of Udupi district,” he stated.

Catholic Sabha regional president, Vinod Crasta, president of Catholic Sabha central committee, Elroy Kiran Crasta, immediate past president of regional committee, Prescilla Menezes, principal of St Mary’s School, Praveen Martis, and regional secretary, Shanthi Pereira, were present.

Vincent Almeida presented the programme. Vinod Crasta delivered welcome address. Shanthi Pereira proposed vote of thanks.

Sorake also took part in the get-together of the new students of St Mary's PU College arranged in its premises. He observed that educational institutions have the responsibility of moulding the students into responsible citizens of the society.
