V S Acharya Visits District

Udupi: Dr V S Acharya, minister for medical education and district in-charge will arrive here on Friday April 28 on a one-day visit.

He will accompany Basavaraj Horatti, minister for primary education at the centenary celebration ceremony at 11 am and proceed to participate in the inaugural of Suvarna Karnataka room of Kaup Padu School at 1 pm. At 2.30 pm he will grace his presence at a function in Valakad high school, after which he will attend the decennial celebration of Hebri S R English medium school at 4 pm. Later he will inaugurate the cricket tournament organized by South Star Friends at Ajjarkad. At 6 pm he will participate in the 70th birthday celebration of Bannaje Govindacharya at MGM College.

Milad Convention Inaugurated

Mangalore: Milad convention, under the auspices of Sunni Student Federation (SSF), Dakshina Kannada district unit, was inaugurated at Town Hall here on Thursday April 27.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunni Jamiyyatul Ulaima Karnataka president Bekal Ibrahim Musliyar, said that Islam does not harbour terrorism, instead it leads towards peace and reconciliation. It is due to the ignorance of true meaning and noble values of Islam that people think of it as harbouring terrorism. He said that the thought and ideals of Allah are the only factors that can protect humanity. He urged Muslims to follow the disciplines and path set by Prophet Mohammed and not to mind what others say or do.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof Abdul Rehman. He said that the Prophet never believed in violence as a solution for violence and he was a symbol of love, peace and sympathy.

Another Protest Against Nagarjuna Power Project

Udupi: The protests against Nagarjuna Power Project are intensifying day by day. Nagarika Seva Trust president K Somanath Naik, while addressing a press meet here on Thursday April 27, has urged the government to retract all approvals given to the proposed project.     

He said that if the false cases filed against the protesters of Nagarjuna Power Project are not withdrawn, the Trust along with other organization will be force to stage a jatha on May 16. There will also be a protest rally in the district on the same day, he added.

“Save Karavali” movement should be organized in the coastal districts to protest against the project, Naik said and added that coastal districts are eco-sensitive and such coal-based power projects will harm the environment.

Nandikoor Jana Jagriti Samiti convener Lakshmanna Shetty was present at the press meet.

Workshop for Domestic Workers Held in City

Mangalore: ‘Motivation and capacity building,’ a training workshop for domestic workers was organized by Ursuline Sisters of Shantidam at Deralakatte recently.

The seminar, conducted under the guidance of provincial councilor Sr Hilda, was inaugurated by Ursuline provincial Sr Susheela.

The training was conducted by Samanvaya director Dr Ronald Cutinha, using group discussions, telefilms, case study, sharing experiences and others. Rights and duties of domestic workers, dignity of labour, importance of values were stressed upon.

 Twenty-one women domestic workers took part in the workshop.
