RBI to Set Up New Board

Mangalore: A board of standards and codes will be soon set up by Reserve Bank of India (RBI), said RBI deputy governor Vittaldas Leeladhar, while speaking on the occasion of  Founder’s Day celebrations of MAHE on Sunday April 30.

The board will employ 200 officers to verify the claims made by banks about special offers and services. The officers will visit the banks incognito and also cross-check the offers made by them on websites, he said.

On the occasion, Leeladhar was conferred the “outstanding Konkani award” by foundation chairman K K Pai. The award is instituted by the TMA Foundation.

Leeladhar also informed that BASEL II norms would be adopted in Indian banking especially in the 86 scheduled banks by 2007. He lauded the contributions made by founders Dr T M A Pai and T A Pai to the banking industry.

Second Round of Pulse Polio on May 21

Mangalore: The second round of pulse polio programme for this year will be organised across the district on Sunday May 21, said a press release from district health and family welfare officer Jagannath.

All people concerned are requested to work towards making it a success.

Grant for Management of Religious Centres Released

Mangalore: Minister of fisheries, horticulture and endowment B Nagaraj Shetty has stated that a sum of Rs 1,120 lakh has been released under the Aradhana scheme for the management of temples and other religious centres of the state for the year 2006-07.

According to a press release issued by the minister, the grant has been approved in accordance with the new guidelines. The amount has been allotted based on assembly-wise categorisation, with Rs 5 lakh granted to each assembly constituency.

The amount will be handed over by the deputy commissioner. In Dakshina Kannada, nine constituencies have received a total of Rs 45 lakh, while Coorg has got Rs 15 lakh, said the release.

Award Winning Kannada Movie Haseena Screened in City

Mangalore: Haseena, a movie by noted film director Girish Kasaravalli, commenced here at Jyothi theatre on Sunday April 30. The show was inaugurated by Corporation Bank executive director K L Gopalkrishna.

The movie is a story of a woman from a minority community but it has a universal appeal, said Kasaravalli.

Among those present on the occasion were Dasajana convener Na Damodar Shetty, stage and film director Sadananda Suvarna, MUDA former president Abdul B Khader and H N Gopalkrishna of Kavita Live Cassettes.

The second show of the movie will be on Monday May 1 at 10 am.
