Udupi, Mar 18: Ronald Castelino, owner of a travel agency in Shankarpur and social worker, claimed in a press meet held on Tuesday March 18 that the Shirva police refused to provide security to an elderly man who was assaulted and threatened by his neighbor earlier this month.

Santhan Mathias (83), residing at Mudarangadi,  Pilaru village, with his sick wife, was badly assaulted and threatened by his neighbor Joseph D’Souza (48), on the evening of Sunday March 2. As per the incident report filed at Shirva police station on Tuesday March 4, the case number is 58/2014. D’Souza is a games teacher and has been involved in many other criminal cases. But none of the cases have been proven in court.

The accused also threatened Mathias’ family comprising of his two married daughters. Despite many witnesses and visual proof, the police were not willing to register an FIR against him. While the complainant pleaded for security, the police allegedly refused it.

This attitude of Shirva police has created a bad image in the minds of the public. The same complaint letter has been submitted to Siddaramaiah, chief minister of Karnataka, Vinaykumar Sorake, district-in-charge minister, and other respective departments. Mathias, the victim of this incident, requested media persons to help him gain justice.

Former Panchayat member Wilfred D’Souza, was also present at the press meet.

Even 83 year old or 38 year old, both are human beings. No one can be ignored. Why priests should interfere in the personal matters? Most of the time people think like they are the rulers with the influence of money and muscle. Simply to say lack of discipline leads to violence.

Why now a days these petty issues stepping to Police Station and Court? Earlier one Priest complaint a case against a youth for silly issue. Being a Christian why can't we forgive each other? Lent is the time to forgive and let us forgive each other.

Dear Kevin Moras, I appreciate your Christian spirit of forgiveness. However, you can forgive humans, but, not the pestering animals/creatures like mosquitos, bed bugs, flies etc. The person who pesters an elderly person is similar to creature which require strong pesticide, not forgiveness. He should be tamed and taught to live like a civilized person in civilized society.

yes, Mr. Kevin, yeh hum logon ke soch ke bahar hai. Hamaari soch yeh hai ki jo maafi ke laayak hai usey maaf karo, jo paansi ke laayak hai usey paansi dho. Zamaana badhal chuka hai. Agar jaan boojeke koi ek gaal pe maartha hai, uske dhono gaal maar maar ke laal kar dho. Yeh hamaari soch hai.

what one can give any life threat for a 83 years old man? May be it a petty issue between the neighbors and someone is trying to make use of the opportunity by using Santhan Uncle. This will end up in the court and at Santhan uncle has to run after the court at the age of 83. Now some guys are tying to make this issue big for their own publicity and not the intention of helping of Santan Uncle. I am sure when this case is filed in the court at that time people who sit next to Santhan uncle will disappear. It is better Santhan uncle to compromise and leave peacefully rest of his life.

If Shirva Police is refusing to register a FIR, then higher authority in the district SP should be made answerable to the public so that action against such police officer/inspector need to be initiated. Corruption is playing a major role in such cases. Civil protectors with khaki uniforms are with rowdies and goondas. I hope District in charge minister, Mr. Sorake will take necessary step to solve such issues in the society
