Mangalore, Mar 28: Feelings of vengeance, sorrow and guilt took a backseat as jail inmates were treated to a cultural feast interspersed with humour in the premises of the district prison here on Friday March 28.

The occasion was a personality development programme, 'Vikasana' hosted by the mass communication and journalism students of St Aloysius College in association with the state prison department. The passionate students came forward to impart personal development lessons to jail inmates in a bid to provide awareness on the good sides of the outside world.

Well-known writer Bhuvaneshwari Hegde who was the chief addressing the programme said, "Attaining peace is the key goal in society. One should spread love and peace not hatred."

She further said, "I write humour stories to make people laugh, a prime factor that facilitates healthy life."

"The only animal on earth which enjoys the bliss of laughter is man. These days there are a lot many people who can laugh, but not many who can make others laugh," she said.

"One should be able to sleep peacefully. Rich people are deprived of sleep as they have many tensions and fears that their material possessions would be looted. "But looking at you, I feel you enjoy better sleep than rich people," she told the jail inmates.

"The mind says, in other words mind lures you, towards negative things, while heart and wisdom tells you not to be driven by the mind. Develop wisdom and go by your heart not by your mind," she advised.

She suggested the jail authorities to purchase some humour books to help jail inmates to have a more lively life reading the books. "To make others laugh is a serious business," she added.

She even cracked some jokes, which evoked laughter among the inmates.

Ramesh P S, superintendent of jail speaking on the occasion quoted D V G’s line from 'Mankutimmana Kagga', and asked the jail inmates to be one among others. He lauded the students for taking the initiative to mingle with the jail inmates.

A dance programme held after the formal inauguration enthralled the jail inmates.

Dr Rajaram Roy, retired medical officer and lecturer of mass communication Lakshmi Shenoy and others were present on the occasion.

Mr Nithin learn to be positive in life. Appreciate the efforts of the student in at least conducting this program. It is easy to sit and comment. If you are really concerned about such things, why dont you go and do something instead of being so cynical of other people's works.

What makes you think all the prisoners are murderers and rapists. Have you been in there yourself to make such statements? Most of the times the flaws in the system just like you mentioned loopholes in the law, lead to innocent people being thrown into the jails. Mind you they are under trials and not full time convicts. I'm not saying all of them are good, but not all of them are seasoned criminals either.

Nonetheless, kudos to the team who have organized this. But do take Mr Nithin's 'request' into consideration and keep organizing programs for the 'better' section of society. Peace.

What a great and praiseworthy gesture on the part of St. Aloysius College to create an opportunity to visit the local jail and enthuse the inmates with the feeling of hope and reconciliation. Each and every inmate, regardless of the crime they have committed, should be given an opportunity to think that it is not the end of their journey but it is part of the destiny of their life. Each and every inmate should be given a chance to realize that sooner or later the prison doors will be opened for them and they will be free citizens of the world. Each and every inmate should appreciate that it is their own determination that should give them a new life in the real world where they can easily get a gainful employment in order to live with dignity and respect.

As much as possible, the media should not be allowed to take any photography within the prison systems, including the pictures of any volunteers. The privacy of the inmates as well as the volunteers should be of top consideration because there are many safety and security measures attached in the process of embracing our dedication to life.

As and when an inmate, male or female,is ready to walk out of the prison cell, he or she deserves lot of rehab programs so that the inmate is fully capable to be part of the real world. This is a process that is long and painful because the inmate while being incarcerated develop their own stubborn characters that can cause further impacts in the society they belong, including their own families.

"Re-entry" program and a move towards "recidivism" is a Course that is essential to be included in every College or University in India where each and every faculty member and student should be made aware of all the facts and figures attached in the Criminal Justice systems in a country such as India where our prisons will be flooded with more and more people committing one blunder or another due to our fast changing life.

    Great job.
In fact , rehabilitation program ex: like how Kiran Bedi was conducting- to use their human resource -train them .. Discipline them..make them human beings and equip them with skills so that once they are out of jail,..will find jobs to work and look after themselves sand be useful to family and society..
let the Human feelings be evoked and make them responsible and loved human beings and not discarded animals..
In fact, most of them would have great skills-potential, but just wrong upbringing or misguided or other reasons.
Rehabilitation programme of this nature ..make it more apt..
in fact tailors.. masons..electrocal..plumbing.. Carpentry.. Electrician courses can be conducted so they develop this trade once they are out..
even teach them to make :
    vada -pav bhaji.: cooking etc.
    tailoring...music...
make them responsible human beings..and in return let them educate the Prison inmates...
