Mangalore, Jun 20:
‘Sasmira’, the Synthetic and Art Silk Mill’s Research Association, an organisation linked to the Ministry of Textiles of the Union Government has written to Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology (MIFT) seeking information regarding their status of existing curricula, capacities and infrastructure

Sasmira has been entrusted the task of collecting the information, by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Textiles under the Chairmanship of the Ministry of Textiles Joint Secretary Jamini Kumar Sharma.

The purpose of the committee is to examine the status of existing educational and training infrastructure available in the country and explore the directions and opportunities of future growth in the human resource segment of the textile sector. It will study the information provided by the institutions with an objective to strengthen these institutions for coping with massive requirements of trained manpower in the coming years.

Placing the letter before the press, founder of MIFT M G Hegde said that the textile industry in India is expected to grow to 85 billion US Dollars by the year 2010. This growth will throw open the need for 12 million new jobs. He further urged the Karnataka Chief Minister to constitute a state-level committee to look into the matter.

The textile industry is growing and the demand for human resources is increasing. Thus government must improve education and job opportunities in the textile sector, he said.
