Mangalore: Action replay - Another smuggling attempt thwarted, passenger arrested

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jun 4: In yet another case of its kind, a passenger arriving from Dubai was arrested at Mangalore International Airport for trying to smuggle nearly 2.5 kg of gold on Tuesday June 3 night.

The passenger, identified as Hussainar Kudva, is a resident of Perla, Kasargod.

He was caught by the officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mangalore, soon after he landed by Air India Express flight from Dubai at around 10 pm on June 3 night.

The gold was concealed in his shoes and the DRI officials intercepted him when he walked through green channel.

The gold, totally weighing 2466.60 grams, worth Rs 60 lac, was in the form of two bars and four pellets.

Hussainar was arrested and produced before the judge who remanded him in judicial custody.

As reported earlier, the customs officials at the airport, on the same night, thwarted smuggling attempt by a passenger who arrived by the same flight. The modus operandi in both the cases was the same, with gold being concealed in the shoes worn by the accused.

Just assuming : Ultimately they may send the ' gold ' for testing and the report will clarify that its ' brass 'and not ' gold '. The case will thus be thrown away and the " carriers " let away ?

In any case the Govt. has confiscated the gold. Now the same Govt. will have to feed them for a few years in jail. The confiscated gold is for the Central Govt. but our State Govt. has to feed these " carriers " in our jails.

Every single Indian knows that such huge amount of Gold cannot be taken into India without Customs clearance and duty paid. These " carriers " are taking a huge risk on behalf of their masters in Dubai & India. Otherwise this labour class or sales boys cannot afford to buy such huge amount of Gold in Dubai in the very first place. These people cannot afford to visit home even once in 3 - 5 years and are lured with free tickets.

Mr. Aktar, I suppose these poor guys are illiterate and are lured by a ' good ' reward when they land in Mangalore. Probably they are also given a free passage to India. The Gold may not be for them and as you mentioned they must be only " carriers ". I wonder what the law in India is if you are caught and prosecuted.

In Dubai when you travel, no matter what your buy how much you buy. Only pay access baggage charges if any. While entering the country the authorities will check what the passenger is bringing.

The act become smuggling only when you bring in goods without payment of duty. So, action can not be taken against the person who supplies them the gold at a foreign country

All they have to do is take this guy to dubai and get hold of the man who supplied it to him...And with the help of local police, they can take any actions further...Is it that difficult to do this?? Or continue nabbing people who bring this and make name by catching them

Mr.Aslam, do you encourage smuggling ? When you land in the UK and if you have carried extra cartons of cigarettes than permitted, the same is confiscated. Every country is free to frame its own laws.

Every time someone is caught, we read only one statement "produced before the judge who remanded him in judicial custody". Thereafter no news about investigation, whereabouts of gold confiscated, who is the mastermind of all this.

I believe, we need to demand for audit of all confiscated gold from Customs department. In addition, it would be better for airport authority to sell this gold in auction and use for the betterment of Airport Development and reduce the burden of common man of paying hefty airport tax

Why can't they make golden underwear and wear it on? If any one ask to remove it they can file defamation on rape case. If they take the underwear away they can file one more case that is robbery case.

So, As per my rough calculation 200-300 youngsters from KasrGOLD had been detained in M'lore airport in last couple of years. So, KarsarGOLD's super intelligent human beings are using Manglore airport only? because we rarely read the news of such arrests in elsewhere? just wondering. Or may be because I'm too much attached to Daijiworld and don't read another news magazines.

If 10 passengers gang carrying same amount of gold concealing in the shoes and one person is caught, the ring leader can still make profit assuming 20% margin.

If law changes and gold import become legal, judge may throw out all the pending gold smuggling cases. Chances are there all the seized gold will be returned to the accused.

Besides, the government has to spend the tax payers money to lock up the accused, feed him and attend to his medical needs. Either way, it will be a loss for the tax payers.

Best way to settle the case is to collect 100% of the value as duty, for und imports and other restrictions on travel such as undergoing strip search for every departure and arrival for certain period of time.
