Dubai to build world's largest shopping mall

Dubai, Jul 6 (Agencies) : Dubai has unveiled plans to build the world's first temperature-controlled city Mall of the World, an ambitious project spread over an area of 48 million sq ft, to attract tourists even during the scorching summer months.

The project will comprise the world's largest indoor theme park, covered by a glass dome during the sweltering summer months, and 100 hotels and serviced apartments.

It will house the largest shopping mall in the world with an area of 8 million sq ft, which will take the form of an extended retail street network.

Additional districts within the project will include a wellness dedicated zone catering to medical tourists.

The project was launched by UAE vice-president Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum yesterday and will be developed in multiple phases. But the details of the cost or the completion date was not disclosed.

Once completed, about 180 million visitors are expected to visit the extended retail street network.

"The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai's tourism infrastructure as soon as possible. This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us; and we are determined to achieve our vision," Sheikh Mohammed said.

"Tourism is key driver of our economy and we aim to make the UAE an attractive destination all year-long. This is why we will start working on providing pleasant temperature- controlled environments during the summer months," he said.

The project, developed by Dubai Holding, will introduce the concept of an integrated pedestrian city connected to the mall and offering a wide range of leisure, retail, cultural, wellness, recreation and hospitality options under one roof.

Tourists will be able to enjoy a week-long stay without the need to leave the City or use a car.

The Celebration Walk, similar to the Ramblas Street in Barcelona, will connect the cultural district to the rest of the Mall.

"This project is a product of extensive research studying international and regional tourists' requirements and preferences...The project will be developed in phases in alignment with the gradual growth of family tourism in Dubai," said Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, chairman of Dubai Holding, said.

That's nice. Dubai can keep on building world's largest mall and world's highest buildings at the cost of the cheap labour they are provided by the Asian workers. Besides it falls even cheaper when the workers are not paid for months on end. Keep it up Dubai!

Why don't India use few of its coasts and make gated high-end Cinderella cities for tourists so that they can stay, have health treatments, visit tourist places around the region. This gated city should have everything from shopping malls, to open bazaars, to cultural centers, to amusement parks, to service apartments, to indoor/outdoor sports facilities, to star hotels to world class restaurants.

Some times I feel how about outsourcing our country to countries like Dubai. On the criminal side, everything will be stopped because of strict law and order. Improvements also, we may get to see better projects than these stupid Nethravathi thiruvu, Ushnastavara projects. All big projects may get -uted faster. We will outsource it for 5 years and then see where we will be. Really. Pity on us... look at the projects countries are dreaming about. We are discussing helicopter scams, IT scams, Herald News papers scam, MLC seats sold for crores of rupees... when will we end all these and think of our country and advanced projects. I can't say, projects like above which above project looks like India can never think, of course unless complete clean up of the current political mafia in place.

As long as uneducated and rowdies are in the system, the country cannot progress. Dubai is boasting of having 180 million tourists, and India is struggling to get 18 Million. First let us have ONLY ONE decent, clean and hygienic PUBLIC TOILET per city.

Dubai is ready to spend millions for attracting tourists world wide, our India which has all the natural beauty freely given by nature could have attracted thousands of tourists without costing much, sadly our government has failed to maintain it. It also becomes every ones duty to protect nature, if you cannot protect at least don't spoil it.
