Madikeri, Dec 7: On Saturday, December 6, a person drowned in river Kaveri near Siddapur in the district. The deceased has been identified as Santosh (25), son of Srinivas and Lalita couple from Nalvattekre within the limits of Nellihudkeri gram panchayat.

The grandmother of Santosh had died two days back at Baradi in Nalvattekere. Her cremation had taken place on Friday. As per the traditions followed here, all the clothes in the household had to be washed for removing negative impact of the death in family. The family had reached the river for the purpose, and after washing clothes, a bucket slipped out of their hands and began moving away. As Santosh knew how to swim, his assistance was sought. Santosh, who tried to retrieve the bucket, suddenly got caught in a deep spot in the river and could not wriggle out of the river current. He died in front of the eyes of his close ones.

A complaint was thereafter made to Siddapur police. Station house officer, Harivardhan, and other staff visited the spot. Local divers scouted for the body till evening, followed by fire brigade personnel. However, the body could not be found.
