Rwanda to host 2016 African Nations Championship


Kigali (Rwanda), Feb 24 (IANS): Rwanda will host the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from Jan 16 to Feb 7.

Rwanda was selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Rwandan sports minister Joseph Habineza said Monday, reports Xinhua.

Habineza said this is the third time Rwanda will be hosting a major tournament, the two previous being the 2009 African Youth Championship and the 2011 Africa Under-17 Championship.

It is likely that the 2016 CHAN will feature 16 teams, the minister added.

According to the Rwanda Football Federation, the 30,000-capacity Amahoro Stadium here, constructed in 1988, should host the main matches of the championship while the other major playgrounds selected to host the tournament include Rubavu and Huye.
