Mangaluru: Following complaint, public banned from entering Mangala Stadium

Mangaluru, Feb 27: Mangala Stadium has always been popular hub for the health-conscious, young and old alike. People flock to the stadium for jogging, walking or using its facilities for their daily dose of exercise. However, a sudden move to ban the public from entering the stadium has left the people both surprised and devastated.

The district stadium committee held a meeting with deputy commissioner (DC) A B Ibrahim along with the minister for youth empowerment, sports and fisheries, Abhaychandra Jain on February 25 and passed an order that says only athletes and trainers will be allowed to enter the stadium and engage themselves in training, while the public will be banned from entering inside the stadium. The public has been informed to instead use the walker's path located outside the stadium.

This has made the people fume and protest. They say that M R Poovamma, the athlete from Dakshina Kannada district who has earned internation fame, wants to train on the synthetic track stadium and therefore the public is not allowed inside. The people are demanding that the district stadium committee specify a training time for Poovamma and let the stadium for the public use during the rest of the hours.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Girish Karanth, senior district level racewalker said, "The district stadium committee has informed the public that four days ago, they had recieved complaint from a person alleging that public caused some trouble during training sessions. For this reason senior people and other members of the public are banned from the stadium. We have submitted a memorandum to the committee. This is not a protest, this is our request to the goverment to grant us permission to enter the stadium.

"Poovamma and her brother had recently complained to the DC that public was disturbing them and not allowing them to train. But a lot of people said that Poovamma and her brother and other athletes do not cooperate with others and that their behaviour is not appropriate," he added.

Unfortunately, the website of the department of youth empowerment and sports which is run by the state government shows wrong contact number of the office of assistant director, Dakshina Kannada.

Panduranga Gowda, deputy director of youth services and sports, Dakshina Kannada district said, "Federation Cup tournament is going to start from May 1, 2015 and athletes are busy traning. A few days back Poovamma had some problems with the public as people were using the synthetic track to walk when Poovamma and other athletes were training. So this made Poovamma complain to the DC."

He also said that the public is banned up till the Federation Cup is over and later it would be decided whether to make the ban permanent or withdraw it. "Right now we request the public to cooperate with us," he added.

I grew up running in Mangala Stadium. I was happy when they upgraded the track. It was a runners paradise. My clocked by best 1K on this track (3.56 minutes). I'm not a professional athlete, but I practice every day.

I really looked forward to running in Mangalore whenever I came to my home town.

Poovama was my batchmate in Canara High School Urva. She learnt how to run in this very stadium (Thanks to Canara Urva). If this ban was enforced 10 years ago, Poovama wouldn't be representing India, she would probably be doing some thing else.

Athletes don't just land here from the moon, they grow up amongst us.

    Very disappointed.

They built the stadium with public tax money. Now they don't allow public to use it. Even Usain Bolt the fastest ruuner did not have track. He trained without slippers.

Yes she is forced to do that so that she can train better there. They need such a lot of funds to hire good trainers\physio etc.\transportation local\abroad, it's not at all possible with the chicken feed grant given by the Government. It is better for them to move to other States if they have better facilities and sponsors.
You may have read athletes who were not able to attend competitions outside India as they were unable to pay their air fare. Sorry state of affairs.

What about stadiums in other cities where synthetic tracts are present? is the general public allowed inside walking and jogging? Let the athletes train in peace and bring glory to the nation. whether Poovamma gets along with other athletes or not is their internal problem. Public has nothing to do with it. training daily is a sports persons job and the stadium is like their office. do we like it if the any tom dick and harry walks through our office when we are busy doing our job?

This is nothing but BULL##IT the entire committee should be dismantled and replaced with better well deserving qualified personnel, this step motherly attitude is going on from long, i can speak volumes of the mis doings and bias attitude of the concerned dept each and every one of them, some people in the dept presume and think they own the stadium, i hope they know they are just PUBLIC SERVANTS that's all no matter what post they hold in society.

Good step taken by the authorities to ban the public from using Mangala stadium for their morning walk and jogging. This should have been done long back. This is not a public park. This particular stadium is built only in the intention of grooming, training and pick up good sports persons from the state to compete in international level.Because government has spent so much on this stadium and that has to be maintained properly. That is their duty.Everywhere it is like that only.Only sports personalities, members are allowed but at any cost not the public.Making an alternative arrangements is up to the authorities in the best interest of old people, citizens of the city. Why public should cry for this? They must realize the ground reality.Even if public are allowed to enter the stadium, they should be charged on daily or monthly basis at least to recover the cost of the stadium. In the first place they should not be allowed to enter.Come what may.I support the decision taken by the concerned authorities.

All those who cry should not that the stadium is meant for athletes. it is a synthetic track which is built only for athletes. Remember that athletes cannt come and practice on road. The district admn has made a joging path outside and there is also the nearby Gandhi park for joggers/walkers. Why complaint about the only ground which is available for athletes? Dont be selfish. Crores of rupees spent to build the synthetic track. Ask the dist admn to provide an alternative for health conscious Mangalureans.

taxpayers hard earned money is used for constructing and maintaining things like this stadium. if the authorities allow athletes only to use mangala stadium no problem .but they must on priority basis construct an alternative for the common public since unlike western countries one cannot run on footpaths and sidewalks for exercise. several people have used the stadium for years to maintain their health now will have no choice otherwise.

I think it a sensible decision. Synthetic track should be utilized for training and athletic event and not as jogging track for common public. Our general public do not stop cribing. Everything they want free. Let district administration Lets see if administration say you can use the synthetic track at a charge of Rs 50 per hour and lets see how many will opt to utilize the service.

Mr. vellano1, First of all I don't use fake name to express my views. Secondly if government has subsidised my schooling expenses, I too have contributed back to growth of my country by regularly remitting amount earned here all these years through proper banking channels. Also I am paying my taxes diligently every year for my assets back home in India. I am working in some other country because when I working in other country and still contributing to the growth of my home countries. Better than many others who do not work, spend their time in giving press conferences and creating hovoc in common peoples lives and contributing Zero to country.

    Good Move from authorities,

Synthetic tracks are not for general public, become a member of sports club and use the sports facilities. Athletes and general public can not use the same track.
Public will always moan for lack of facilities, sadly its the same public misuses too.

fyi, ever since synthetic track was laid, no one was allowed without proper sports footwear and all were abiding by that rule and moreover here issue is not about spoiling the tack. This is not UK, to become a member of a sports club of your choice, Mangala is the only sports ground in the city that was available to the public.

Comon mr.Geoffrey, defiantly it is a disturbance for top athlete like poovamma to practice when general public is on walk.
why all public wants to walk on synthetic track? let them walk else where. we wants our indian athlts to perform good in Asian and Olympics but where they will get proper training. city administration has taken good step towards this let public follow.

ridiculous this is! apooint guards to take care of the synthetic tracks instead of banning people from their walking purpose outright! .... Janaradhan poojary mukalena chali budpavodu! there are so many sports grounds exclusive for sports people, do people go there to spoil their training..? Ibrahim and ABhyachandra Jain must resolve this! if needed remove the tracks and put it in exclusive ground meant for sportseperson.. Mangala stadium is in the heart of city where lot of residential people reside with high real eastate prices... why should they suffer?...tomorrow you will say, the swimming pool next to it, is used by Michael phelps and ban it for commoners.. justified?!
